Nintendo - Paper Mario - View Post

So far Super Paper Mario has been my second favorite Wii game, but last week I got the original Paper Mario from the Virtual Console and I like it a lot better.

Even though I did enjoy the exploration and trying to figure puzzles out and stuff in the Wii game, I just think making it mainly a platformer and an RPG as an afterthought made it more similar to older Marios and thus makes it stick out less.

I just got a chance to play some Paper Mario today for the first time and I'm surprised how much I am liking it so far. I'm still pretty early in the game, but I'm definitely going to play it to the end. The different mechanics to pull off moves and stuff instead of just selecting a choice from a menu makes the fighting more interesting and fun. The game looks good and the story is the traditional Mario story which I like better than what the story in Super Paper Mario did.

Also, it's got a lot less text, the first half hour or so of Super Paper Mario was overkill. I can see how someone who doesn't like turn based RPG can prefer the new game because it's a lot more action and stuff compared to the old one, but I definitely prefer if they bring Paper Mario back to 80% RPG/20% Platformer instead of the other way around (the way Super Paper Mario was).

Anyway, I'm still early in the game so my views may change but so far I am digging it a lot. I also noticed quite a few stuff in Super Paper Mario that were references to this game and it's a nice touch.

What are your opinions on both games? Do you prefer the new direction or prefer sticking more to the traditional RPG stuff?

funny how my reaction was the exact opposite...  one man's meat is nother man's poison.

 - different mechanics to pull of moves is fun, but they make battles so much longer

 - i loved the super paper mario story!

 - the text is a little much... but i really enjoyed reading the story.  i dislike the traditonal damsel in distress set-piece and found the somewhat twisted storyline of super paper mario extremely enjoyable.  towards the end, i'm actually looking forward to reading the text.  reminds me of one of those twisted short stories you read in anthologies... played out over 20 hours.

 - paper mario is so long... way too many side quests (some people love it i'm sure)... but i got kind of sick of both side quests and battle after battle.  ended up taking me like 3-4 weeks to finish.  it also took me like 3 weeks to finish super paper mario, but it was a more enjoyable experience all the way.

i have played mario and luigi partners in time before on the DS and the mechanics (action commands in particular) in there are on a whole new level compared to paper mario, so perhaps that's why i found the battle mechanics in paper mario to be a tad tedious.  if you liked the action commands in paper mario, you would absolutely love the action commands in that DS game.

my wife plays a fair bit of rpgs, and she also like super paper mario a little more.

after finishing paper mario, i was rather eager to get thousand year door.  but then i realized that i need 1) memory stick 2) gamecube controller 3) the game itself.  probably would bite the bullet at some point, or when nintendo makes the gamecube controller unnecessary for gamecube games.

just curious, do you guys leave Wacka alone, or do you keep going to him for Wacka Bumps until he dies?

the Wii is an epidemic.
