Famicom had a 19m userbase in Japan and the highest attach ratio of any platform ever in Japan (~12 games shipped/Famicom shipped)...so thats a pretty good foundation for Nintendo.
Game Boy and DS are sort of the opposite - ridiculously big base - but relatively low attach rates.
If you believe this thread NES probably is still the platform to sell the most software ever in Japan. Nintendo shipped 225m units of software in Japan. PS2 sellthrough is at ~190m or so in 2008, with shipments probably within a few percent of 200m.
