I don't see why fans of the series would care about which part of the series they play in a game and whether it's treading relatively new territory considering that I already know the story regardless of what they decide to use for the game.
Or perhaps you are talking about fans who have previously bought Naruto games, of which I am not, so I could see your point then. Personally I put anime based games up there with movie based games. I am highly skeptic until I see proof that they don't suck. Luckily UNS had a demo otherwise I never would have considered it. And now instead I'm buying it day one.
I think the difference though, is that I'm buying UNS not because it's a naruto game, but because I know first hand that it is fun. Therefore I don't care what part of the story they use, since the mechanics have already been proven to me.
