Well, considering PS2 is still selling around 300k a month in the US and elsewhere, I just don't see it. DS is 3 years old this spring right? I say life cycle is 3 more years maybe 4 they get to 2011.
Technically it should be easier for DS to accomplish this since it is cheaper at this point in its life cycle than the PS2 was, handhelds have always sold extremely well (at least nintendos anyway).
