DVDShrink is only useful to fit a dual-layer DVD onto a single-layer disc (as far as I recall, anyway). If you want to convert to MPEG-4 (XviD, etc.) with as little hassle as possible, you might try Auto Gordian Knot. Virtualdubmod will give you more freedom, but will require more research and know-how to use effectively.
