Actually, the ability to survive going solo seemes to have been a major basis for the Wii. Nintendo made a system that not only provided a new experience, but also allowed for cheap and easy development.
Even if third parties completely shunned the Wii, Nintendo would be able to count on it's traditional Nintendo games, training games, Wii series and Virtual Console to ensure a system that outsold and out profited the Cube. If Nintendo did go it alone with the Wii, NA and Euro sales would probably be simillarily anemic to the gamecubes, but Japan's sales would be quite, quite high.
