I'm fairly certain that he liked Vesperia a lot. My guess is either we either misunderstood his meaning, or he's speaking more generally about the series as a whole(which admittedly has a lot of games, some of them bad), and not particularly about Vesperia, Symphonia, or Abyss.
I'd assume the 3 "good" ones he's referring to are Abyss, Symphonia, and Vesperia. They are all developed by the same team, indeed the only games ever developed by said team, and they are masterful. If those three games were the only ones in the series, then I'd say the Tales series only superior would be Final Fantasy. However, there have been many mediocre entries, that we can't forget about when ranking the series.
That is another reason generalizing a large group of games because of a few bad eggs, is ignorant, and leads to less informed gamers.

Then Vagrant Story pops its head around the corner and laughs at your ignorance.
Generalizing a series with tons of games that you've never played is like generalizing a genre. Ignorant. Ignorant to the bone. It's like me saying MGS4 is a second-class game because all stealth games suck, even though I'd never played MGS before. It's that same level of ignorance that has drawn my ire here. An unbelievable atrocity that can't stand, and there's no way the argument could stand up to any sort of scrutiany, as you'll see if this post progresses further.
