Nintendo was on top of the console wars with NES and then SNES, but moving on with N64 knocked them down to a distant second. But if you look at it, the PS3 isn't doing as bad as N64 and Sony isn't forgotten as quickly as Nintendo was back then.

 

The only way we will really know is if someone takes the time out to see how much each console has shipped / sold to date for the 1st 2 years.

Anyone saying the PS3 has cost lots has to also understand that it is Sony who lost money on making the console and Sony is also making it back from various sectors not just the PS3, unlike the N64 who just had itself to make money back from.
