Romania:

Local gaming market to reach about 15 million euros this year

In brief

The local gaming market (video games, consoles and other accessories) will reach some 15 million euros this year, and half of this value is to be achieved in the last quarter of 2008, according to Flamingo International representatives.
In the first quarter of this year, Flamingo International registered an 80% growth in the segment of consoles, as compared to the same period of last year. According to company representatives, the best sold products were PlayStation Portable, followed by PlayStation 3 and Play Station 2.

"The increase in the sale of consoles in the first half of this year is the natural result of the positive evolution registered in the Romanian gaming market.

Even if we are behind other European markets, the sales achieved by now offer us an optimistic perspective on the development of this segment of products in Romania, and we are certain that in the coming years we will reach a growth pace similar to the one registered at European level," said the Flamingo International CEO, Jiři Rizek.

On Wednesday, Flamingo International will launch in its store chain the latest version of the Play Station 3 game console, with an 80 GB hard-disk. As regards the games segment, the company representatives estimated that, in the first half of this year, it maintained a growth pace similar to the one registered in 2007, the most sought after games in Romania being God of War 1 and God of War 2 for PS2, Tekken Dark Resurrection for PSP and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and GTA IV for PS3.

Last year, Flamingo International sold 2,000 Sony PlayStation 3 consoles, 3,500 PlayStation Portable consoles, 10,000 PlayStation 2 consoles and approximately 400 Nintendo Wii units.
