The Japanese consumers know about the power of PS3, but the general mainstream consensus, on both Japanese forums, and critical reviews- is the machine's size and price. Once it gets streamlined, and the price drops, it will have a boom in Japan.
The Japanese do not hate Playstation. If anything they hate the 360 with a passion. Enough to buy titles and trade them in as soon as they are done. |
OH MY GOD, YOU WERE IN JAPAN FOR SIX MONTHS!!!!!111. That makes like the most ultimate authority on Japan ever. Let's ignore the fact that PS3 has not been selling well for the past two years even though it is cheapest in Japan and also that Japanese tend to adopt new technology first. Let us also ignore the fact that Wii and DS have been selling like hotcakes, let us ignore the fact that PS3 has virtually no games that appeal to Japanese. And we can safely ignore all of that because you have spent 6 months in Japan. That's like 2/3 of making a baby.

I never said the PS3 wasn't doing optimally in Japan nor did I exclaim to be some sort of ultimate authority. I was referencing that these alarmist comments about PS3 being dead in Japan are stupid. The PS3 will do fine in Japan once the criteria are met that I outlined. Smaller profile / Final Fantasy XIII / White Knight Story / Little Big Planet.

Nobody in this thread said it was dead...it just will never sell like the PSP...or better.
White Knight has potential, but Level 5 games haven't sold outside of DQ and Professor Layton. LBP might have potential...but how many PS3 owners in Japan will like that type of game? They seem to like games like FF or Valkyria Chronicles or something over LBP. FF XIII I agree obviously. Smaller profile games won't help at all. Has Valkyria helped? Has Disgaea helped? No smaller profile game on the PS3 will help the PS3 much (if at all). Heck, Soul Calibur IV didn't boost PS3 sales AT ALL so why would a smaller profile game do that?

We have talked about this one before. Dark Cloud got Greatest Hits which means that it shipped over 400,000 copies to retailers making it at least Level 5's 2nd highest selling game in America behind DQ. Who knows? Maybe it did more.
2. While the PS3 didn't do huge numbers when they launched, it certainly did help the system. Valkyria did, however, get the PS3 back into the 5 digit range (barely).
