| Kyros said: RE:UC, Zak and Wiki and NMH have all done fine Yes but apparently doing "fine" is the best the Wii can do. It simply doesn't have any third-party blockbusters apart from its core audience (sport games, music games, mini games) I am not saying that this is bad mind you and this audience clearly is much bigger than the people who want to play the next GTA, Gears, Bioshock on HD consoles. But it's library is terrible in a wide area of game types and this will not change in the mid future. |
I take issue with this statement. Wii games have been doing more than just "fine": they've routinely been exceeding their publishers' expectations, and that refers to traditional games as well. Let us take No More Heroes as one example: true, it's sold only about 400k, which is pathetic compared to AAA games. But a AAA game it is not: Grasshopper Studios is a niche developer with puny budgets. In spite of that, it's gone on to be the best-selling Suda51 game ever, and he's been in the business for almost two decades now.
Capcom is an even more dramatic counter-example. By their own admission, they're bringing more games to the Wii precisely because their Wii games are exceeding their expectations. RE4 and RE:UC have both sold hundreds of thousands more units than Capcom was expecting, hence Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop. Nor is Capcom the only example; Sega's games, THQ's games, Activision's recent games: many of these have been selling the most on the Wii.
I will grant you that hitherto the Wii's line-up has been deficient in certain areas. However, most of that seems poised to change in the near future. The Wii is getting more and more JRPGs by the week, FPS games are coming in soon (Call of Duty, The Conduit, etc.), Survival Horror is getting stronger and stronger on the system, it's already the king of sports and puzzlers, etc. etc. Granted the sandbox genre is mostly passing the Wii by so far, but it's the only genre I can think of where the Wii will NOT be improving shortly.

Reading comprehension for the win!
I have no idea how I missed that one.
Sorry about that. I'll try to dig up the post-Ubidays announcement ASAP: I KNOW I read it somewhere.
Edit: Hmm, I guess I'll have to retract my statements, and move it all back to the "Rumor" category for now. The word is widespread and hasn't been contradicted by Ubisoft, but everyone's source is a single French reporter who didn't give any sources. Personally, I'm confident that it's happening (or else why not issue a denial, as Ubisoft often does?) but I'll concede that it's not official yet, and thus just a rumor. My apologies.
