Don't worry about PS2 beating next gen systems. SNES beat N64, Saturn and PS1 in 1995- most of 1997 in North America.
NES beat out the Genesis through 1991.
I believe PS1 outsold PS2 in the first year as well (Oct-Oct)
It takes 18 months to two years post all next-gen systems launching for the old systems to be completely dead...which is why in Japan for instance SNES had games in the top 10 software until December 1997, much as PS2 will likely have software in the top 10 in Japan until December 2007..
