I've never been a PC or Xbox guy so online gaming is pretty new to me so I'm cuious to know if this level of a-hole behaviour is to be expected or is this particular game attracting these S.O.Bs in unusually high numbers?

Sounds pretty tame to me.  Halo 2 was the main game I played on Xbox live and it introduced such terms as "ghosting", "stand by", "glitching", and "modding" to my vocabulary.  I think around 80-90% of my games had one of those things happen.  Stand bying and modding were esentially game wreckers that I caused me to stop playing.  For Madden a popular cheat was the simply not do anything, forcing you to forfeit if you actually wanted to try playing someone.  I tried playing Madden but after 4 of the first 5 guys I played pulled that stunt I stopped.  PC online is if anything worse.  I played Call of Duty and Battlefield 2 a lot online but most of the players were more interested in killing the dummy account guy they use to wrack up kills than they were in actually playing.  Many who did play seemed to use aimbots so they had supernatural abilities to kill you.

All in all, I would say count yourself lucky if all they do is quit before the end of the game.  I know it sucks losing a win but at least the game itself wasn't ruined.  The loser cheaters you find on Xbox live and the PC not only rob you of a win but also of any enjoyment playing them game.
