I've always liked Scyther. Too bad it's not that hot in a fight, and it can evolve - even though Scizors are a pain in the ass to get if you don't have a DS and/or don't know any other Pokêmon players.
Gyarados is an excellent water Poke that became even better in D/P editions. Water Physicals and Dragon Dancing FTW.
While I like pretty much every Dragon pokemon ever made, it's a shame they grow so slowly. Training a Dratini to a Dragonite takes freaking forever without Rare Candies or Pokerus.
I always end up using the Geodude line of pokes, even when they start to suck after midgame. I don't know why. Then again, I only trained a Crobat once, and it ruled. So meh.
