@The Anarchyz: It started when Shigeru made a game (in surveillance of Gumpei Yokoi) about a moustached carpenter, who was supposed to save a girl from a big ape. Donkey Kong was Nintendos first phenomenon, SMB came years later (although, it was just as phenomenical).
@ssj: Sony have had influence in gaming, but not like you suggested, as Rol said, it's largely because of population growth and the competitions lack of retail channel in certain regions. Besides, gaming going into 3D and cimematic games was an industrywide change, where Sony did contribute much about nothing, but since PSX stands as a "change in power" in games industry, people often seem to see it as an industry expanding console. The thing that Sony did with PSX, was that it marketed PSX heavily, which did help the console to reach larger (percentage of) audience.
