Not sure if it helps you at all Kwaad but I, for instance, bought Bust-A-Move bash even though it got a lot of negative press.
Reviews said it was mainly for die hard Bust-A-Move fans, so I bought it. Also it was rather cheap only costing $35 new.
Well I took a chance and boy did they screw up a incredibly simple, yet fun game. The arcade version of this game from like ten years ago puts this thing to shame big time.
At any rate, perhaps many people are testing the waters and taking chances at games, regardless of the reviews. Many of my favorite games in the past have often been overlooked or even have gotten mediocre scores in reviews.
Granted, this is possibly only a small element of the reasons behind the answer to your question. I just haven't seen is voiced heavily in this discussion yet.
