Digg is a community-driven news site.
Members put stories up, linking back to the sites where the stories come from. The stories are then voted on and the ones with enough votes make the front page of digg and exposure to millions of people who will click through to the site.
Basically it is a good way to get a lot of people to read about something - sites like Kotaku depend on it.
