Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo failing at online?

Joelcool7 said:

Alright so today I read the latest article on the VGChartz home page. The article about Nintendo Shop Channel in Japan is now going to have demo's. In the article

Said Iwata, "Unless we can give people a reason to go to the Wii Shopping Channel and DSi Shop even if they don't have business there, I don't believe digital goods sales will heat up."

Heat up. I don't know about you but I have over 200$ in Virtual Console and WiiWare software going on 300$. Also judging from talking to other gamers here on VGChartz and on other gaming forums. People are constantly complaining about not having enough room in their Wii's for all the software they're downloading.

How much do the sales really need to heat up. If even 10% of Wii gamers spend as much as I have that would be heat enough. Now I'm not sure about everyone in the world but every single person I know with a Wii has spent at least 20$ on WiiWare and Virtual Console. An attach rate of 2/3 games per console. I myself have dozens.

How much have you spent online or do you fall into this cool market Iwata is talking about?

I've spent about 300$ , I have 5400 points that I have yet to spend!

well when you realize that there's only about 15 of you hardcore gamres there, then you'll understand.

15x300$ + 50Millionx0$= 4500$

i have spent tons as well, but i think many people won't go unless you give them incentive to go at least once. That's why i think they should include 1000 wii points whenever you buy a wii.

Yah I noticed Nintendo gave 500 points with my DSi. I spent those 500 points online and bought DSiWare! I'm sure if Nintendo gave 1000 free points with every Wii that would be more then enough of an incentive to get gamers online and buying software. Heck even a 500 points card with every Wii (Enough for an NES game) will at least get people online looking at the store.

The trick is getting people online, once you have someone in the store the impulse buying starts. Or in my case "The buy anything sentimental" begins and butt loads are made.

As for their only being a small amount of hardcore gamers (Filling their hard drives), they're are enough of us to make a big issue out of the lack of more internal memory. I know it always comes up on forums, on G4 and on GameTrailers, why does the Wii have so few blocks?

Anybody else maxed their internal memory yet?

I haven't really heard any serious complaining after Nintendo fixed it so you can download to your SD card and lauch (actually delayed launch as it auto-copies to internal).  Prior to that I was complaining, but that was a long time ago they fixed it.

Its the typical model. The hardcode gamers or Ninty fans buy everything - and everyone else gets nothing. They need to get more casual gamers heading to the shop - I still think WiiConnect is vastly underused.

Pretty much this, just because you've spent hundreds of dollars doesn't mean everyone else did. I've bought SMB3 for my free points, it was meh and I never bought anything else there. Sorry but I can hardly enjoy these classic games today, my standarts have moved to higher level. Unless you have some sentimental value invested in those, there is no point in buying them, as today, they aren't that good anymore.

i got 0 wii points because i always waist points on the VC or wiiware lol... anyway how can anyone complain about not enough space on there wii's haven't they got an SD card? im not complaining lol

I have 21 VC and 7 WiiWare games on my SD card. And 4 DSiWare games.

I think Nintendo's online shops are decent, but they really could do more to push them. They advertise the camera and sound functions on the DSi, so why not advertise DSiWare and WiiWare? Free points with both DSi and Wii would be a good start, too. I also think they should streamline both shops and make them more user friendly. Running games directly off SD card would be good too.

I'd also like to see VC become a DSi/Wii service. Add portables onto the Virtual Console, and make all current (with the exception of N64 games) VC games available on DSi. It'd be great to take my SD card out of my Wii, and play some Super Mario RPG or Earthworm Jim on the go. I'm sure Nintendo could make that happen. Though since they haven't done this by now, then I don't know what they're waiting for.

I have 10 such items overall, 2 N64, 2 NES, 1 each SNES, Genesis, T16, Neo-Geo, and 2 WiiWare, so like $85 worth.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Well I think when compared to the amount of money HD console users spend online, Nintendo is behind. But I don't think it's like "ZOMFG! WE TEH FAILZ!".

I wouldn't say they are failing with digital downloads, but they have missed some opportunities to make it a more popular service. I think Demos are a good addition, but like he says may not be enough to entice people to sign into the shop channel that never do. I really think the service just needs more promotion. I think the space at the top of the Wii Chanel screen should be ad space for developers, for people with their Wii connected to the internet, which would show off some downloadable games to the people who never go to the shop channel. I also think if there were occasional promotions, like discounted prices on certain titles that would help. Also obviously having a few tv/print ads featuring some of the best or most popular titles would help.
