Forums - Sales Discussion - Ps3 winning next gen console race? so far? guess its how you look at it

Saying a system's sales are succesful considering the price really means that the system isn't successful because of the price. ^^^Quote of the day.

Uh... No. That really doesn't make any sense. The audience that doesn't have a PS2, yet is already considering a PS3 purchase, and really wants GoW2... I don't see this being more than about 11 people. Heh. PS3s probably don't even play GoW2 in Europe.

I didn't say they necessarily really want GoW2. Simply that having a big name game like that that is playable on the PS3 alongside PS3 games may well be sufficient to tip the scales for people. Games sell systems. In particular, games generating a buzz sell systems. 1 million pre-orders for GoW2 (think I read that somewhere) and very positive reviews right across the board is a lot of buzz. I'd say more than 11 people

Generally games made for that system, though.

Now add a PS and subtract a DO from the consoles name and that sentence still seems frightfully accurate.
Kidding or not the situation behind these two systems were different. I was in cali when the 3do was released and I saw its demise early on. The 3do is a standard. The 3do never had successful consoles in its name before. THe 3do was never one price. I have actually seen 3 different 3do's released Panasonic, JVC and goldstar and after more research It seems as if they were more.. like japan had a sanyo 3do. Performance varied on each console which led to mixed reviews and customer confusion. This is a different time period. People are spending 300+ and growing for their gadgets... in comparison to many other items on the market the PS3 isn't that bad. And I am actually curious of whether or not the 3do sold 2 million + units. I highly doubt it... even over the multiple iterations.

I think this holiday season will be the real test to see more into whos gonna win this generation.. i think the race will be close though but i think people will consider that a failure for the ps3 or even the 360 especially if the wii wins

I would like to ask one small question: Even if the PS3 is beating the xbox360 launch numbers WW. Does it matter when in USA the xbox360 is outselling ps3 now when there is no lack of units? How can PS3 hope to regain the top position when PS3 was outsold by even the gameboy last month.

There is always place for hope and faith. No matter what.

Ok. In my oppinion the only advantage that the Xbox 360 and PS-3 currently have: It is not so hard to write multiplattform games as for the Wii. As far as I see it: The PS-3 is in no postion right now to successfully sell games. All game developers are in a cracy fight to achieve even the brak even point. On the Xbox 360 the situation is a bit better, add to it the possibility for multiplattform games with the PC (a big wish by Microsoft and they can easily deliver the necessary environment) and you have a successful combination for game developpers, but bad news for Sony. When I look at the current numbers I have severe doubts that Final Fantasy will be exclusive for the PS-3. Sony does not have the kind of money that Square Enix would demand for the risk of a single plattform game! The Wii is simply putting too much pressure on the market . While the situation is not really great for the Xbox 360 it is no catastrophe. They are in the general direction of their break even point for the hard ware and can lower the prices if necessary. Their hardware complexity can be controlled rather easily by libraries and they simply have more hardware installed at the moment. And a factor that wilöl come into play later: It's hardware was developped for the price, nothing else. Microsoft has all the IPs that they need to make any changes that they like and that can lower the production costs. The PS-3 on the other hand can't really pass its cometitors under this circumstances. A very effective use of the SPEs is impossible in a multi plattform environment but it has t6o justify its higher costs. At the moment its biggest advantage is its BluRay capability. But if the prices for BluRay and HD DVD Players drop as predicted, this advantage will be no longer there by the end of this year.Furthermore the break even point for the hardware isn't even in sight yet It needs special games especially for its hardware but even at 6 million it would be a very considerable risk for the game developers compared to the rather cheap multiplattform development that is not as risky (more installed harware = more potential customers). The most interesting hardware for single plattfrorm development is probably the Wii (easier to program, no need for very sophisticated artwork for HD). This is probably the best description for the next few years! The biggest problemfor the PS-3: Even an absolute fantastic game wont raise the hardware sells of the PS-3 dramatically, due to the need of a HDTV! In this situation even the Xbox 360 has a better position: you could connect it to a Monitor if necessary. It would not be great but much cheaper than a smaller HDTV and in a totally different region than the bigger HDTVs, where a PS-3 would make sense. The Xbox has its advantage as a low cost gaming PC, even if HD would not get a tight grip of the general public but the PS-3 more or less bets on the success of big HD Displays. Without them a PS-3 doesn't make sense. And this speaks against high risk development by game developers and few possibilities for games to make up the higher price tag!

Kars the comment "The Wii is simply putting too much pressure on the market" shows very little undersanding on the current development environement. You're basically saying that (after the PS3 and XBox 360 force developers to have far larger development teams, with longer development cycles, and an overall larger budget) the strain on the industry is caused by the company who wants to keep development costs reasonable ... The thing you fail to mention is that the PSP, PS2 and Wii all have (in a rough sense) very similar technical abilities and drastically outsell the XBox 360 and PS3 in both Software and Hardware. In other words, because of the Wii and PS2 it is possible to produce a game at 1/4 the cost that sells 2 to 4 times as many copies and (by your claim) it is their fault that the industry is struggling ... Nice ...

I just registered to say I love this site and I love these discussions. We can expect to see a quite bigger (not substantially but still) figure for the PS3's monthly sales in March. With games like Motorstorm and God of War 2 you can pretty much bet on it. Someone here said that GoW2 will boost only the PS2's sales and not the PS3's but that's not entirely true; If you want to buy GoW2 and you know what a PS3 is compared to a PS2, why not get the more superior console? One might argue because of the large gap between the prices but then he might think "The PS3 is next-gen, and is actually a one time investment in the future of gaming, and it has a blu-ray player in it, and it has a free online service and it can play half of the PS2 games (For PAL territories) and that figure is gonna grow with time". In a nutshell, GoW2 IS a system seller for both consoles and it is without doubt a Killer-app, so either way, Sony wins this month. BTW, GoW2 was created by Sony so you can't help but wonder how God of War 3 (If it comes out, though rumors actually confirm it) would look like on the PS3 running on 1080p. And on the same note, that entire "If you don't have an HD-TV you can't play the PS3" (LOL rhymes) arguement is total BS, IMO. Just as there are 360 players playing their games on a normal TV and enjoying it, there are PS3 players who do the same thing and enjoy it just as much. Just my opinion...

Planning on getting a PS3 sometime in July-August.
