As several people have said, I think the result will be that 3D and 2D Mario-games coexist in the same way that NSMBWii and SMG2 will, within a year from now.

I actually prefer they stick with the 2-D focus, as long as they keep the gameplay fesh. The 2-D Mario games are far superior anyway IMO. Galaxy is an extremely great looking and well made game, but it's just doesn't beat the experiences Mario 3 and World gave.

Personally I'd love to see this new mario game be mainly 2D with 3D thrown in too aka Super Paper Mario which IHO is still the best mario on the Wii

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

I think Nintendo are really trying to keep japan alive, whether their strategy will actually work is another issue.

Remember that Wario did not sell so theres no guaruntee that 2D will be a bigger priority in the near future. Wait for Sonic and NSMBW, then we can talk potential.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

SMG around 9 million... yeah sure it's doomed... WTF that is pretty much more then 96% of all games would ever dream of selling.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Are we strictly speaking of platform games for some reason?

Because I expect Mario Kart to keep ahead of both 2d an 3d Mario platformers in sales, and I see that as the flagship Mario title in the future.

platform games went into decline since the move to 3d.
my girlfriend dont play games very often but she hates 3d games as the camera and control is confusing.
she loves the 2d games though.
i guess a lot of people love to play a 2d platformer and not a 3d.

ps I really loved galaxy i thought it was as good as the old 2d marios. sunshine had a horrible camera and mario64 was something completely new at the time, but in the end i didnt love it like the (s)nes mario's

If one game sells for 20Mil and another sells for 8Mil, and your company made both, it means your company sold a total of 28Mil copies of games. Iif you drop the 8Mil game, the other game is still selling 20Mil. Then err, you would sell 8,140,000 copies less. Its like people throwing money at you and they want to throw just as much or more in the future, sure, go ahead and stop that!
