Hear hear!

Although Microsoft and Sony have done their respective bits for gaming... but then again, Sony undoubtedly played a part in the demise of Sega.

I'm so glad Nintendo is back on top.

+1

Sony's arrival in to the gaming business was the start of the "corporate" era of console gaming.

It wasn't about how good you were, it was about how much money you had.

It's always been like this. Let's take music as an example. It was one of the greatest forms of art, but with the rise of the contemporaneous era, it's boiled down to who has the clip with the most hot chicks or who's more of a bad girl and so on, and the more money you have, more people like you, because north-americans ought to be represented by rich good-looking people, rather than them-selves. Anyways, in today's art scenario, cash is what counts, quality is secondary.

And this is why I support piracy.

Artists are supposed to be starving!

I didn't say that they have to miserable, you get my point -______-'

Of course I'm just exaggerating.

Unlike literature or music, games can't be created without at least SOME money, to begin with.

But honestly, I do believe that the crash of many current multi-billion dollar corporations would benefit gaming (and music) as an art form.

@ angrypoolman Excellent thread.

Not angry enough though. You are starting to sound like the poolman that gets lucky in "the movies".

Too many me too shooting games on xbox, the best games for xbox are FPS games. Its like MS is catering to a niche crowd, Ninty on the other hand is catering to the mainstream. While I think Sony's direction got muddied by the BluRay/HD-dvd wars.

Rubbish, Nintendo deserve to be on top because they worked hard this gen to bring something different to the table, did they last gen? no. and they suffered for it.

So are you saying last gen with the gamecube, they deserved to be on top because they started gaming?

my only annoying thing with Nintendo this gen is the lack of 3rd party support (GOOD QUALITY SUPPORT).

I am sure Nintendo could be a bit more active in trying to help in gettings some western games. Their main focus is still on the japanese market.

Objection! Nintendo lacked 3rd party support since the N64. Also they have plenty of games you just got to look for them.

Tag:I'm not bias towards Nintendo. You just think that way (Admin note - it's "biased".  Not "bias")
(killeryoshis note - Who put that there ?)
Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Do Not Click here or else I will call on the eye of shinning justice on you.

They don't deserve to be number one.
Sparse support for online gaming ( they still haven't gotten with the times )

Shovelware up the wazoo ( Ps2 also had this problem but they also had 3rd party support and many good exclusives)

Aside from a few sequels to their hardcore titles, Nintendo mostly caters to casual gamers ( Wii Fit, Sports, Music)

When their customers ask for new titles they get answers like " keep playing twilight princess and brawl" from the execs.

They force motion controls into almost every game and while some benefit from them, most don't.

They show too much favoritism towards Japan. ( wheres my black wii, classic controller pro and fatal frame 4)

Nintendo deserved to win. They went after an overlooked demographic (females and families), they debuted the Wii at a great price ($250), they didn't force all of these extras on you. They never forgot their bread and butter (creating a gaming machine). The lack of third party support is not their fault. If third party developers want to develop for the Wii, they can. Development costs are low (inexpensive dev kits and SD programming is much cheaper), there is a big install base for them to reach out to. There's no reason why they shouldn't be developing more quality titles for the console instead of shovelware. Stuff like No More Heroes, Madworld and Muramasa would sell poorly on the PS360 as well so you can't use the excuse that "core" games can't sell on it. If they release quality A/AA/AAA quality "core" (I hate this word) games with mass appeal (instead of just niche appeal) on the Wii, it will be successful. The Call of Duty ports were apparently inferior in quality to the X360/PS3/PC versions and yet those sold over a million each on the Wii. It's not Nintendo's fault that third-party developers aren't developing more "core" games for the console. The lack of horsepower on the Wii isn't an excuse for third-parties to avoid it. The PS2 was much weaker graphically than the Xbox (much higher specs AND easy to program for) but guess what third-party devs chose as their console of choice?

That said, Nintendo is still corrupt just like every other company. In the mid/late 80s and early 90s they used their power in the market (90+% market share) to bully third-party developers into developing exclusively for Nintendo (leaving the Sega Master System high and dry) and bullied retailers as well from what I understand (to keep competitors like Sega off the shelves and what not). I don't know how people can remain loyal to a company that has absolutely no sense of morality. Sony and Microsoft of course are no different. They didn't get that big by playing nice. By proclaiming loyalty to a multinational corporation that just wants your money and doesn't care an ounce about you, console fanboys come off as complete materialistic naive tools.

Hint:
They are.

Nintendo deserves to be on top because Wii sports, Wii fit and now Wiisports resort. They are so good for you.

In other words Nintendo videogames are right like a picnic with the family. Is a healthy social hobbie. Compared to them, Ps360 hardcore bloody shooting games in HD look as wrong as pornography.

This ad is as real as it gets, showing a wide range of demographics.

The only "real" thing about this tv spot is the demographics. It was a smart thing to do hiding the actual gameplay.

It is sold as an harmless kids game, without real violence or blood. We all know that HD gaming is all about realism, including realistic gore.

(Funny thing how some fans denied that the 360 was a shooters console)

But consumers are not that stupid. (Specially when it comes to a $250 bucks or more purchase). And remember that most of the buying decisions at homes are STILL taken by women. Moms often care about their kids education.

PS: I love Gears of War 2, but not because of the gore (I don´t mind about it, personally); I like it because it is a great third person shooter and the cover system is fantastic. But I have to admit that shooters in general should be mature games, therefore niche games, so they are just a limited segment of the market, not mainstream.

Conclusion:

I am with the mainstream market:

1) Nintendo is on top. That is not luck. They deserve it.

2) Microsoft is the second best. That is not luck. They deserve it, but in marketing being the best second is sometimes great. (Example: Pepsi second to Coke)

3) Sony is the third big loser. (Blu-ray: huge mistake). That is not luck, they deserve to be there. (Note: I still may buy a ps3 next year when they release GT5, and by that time, blu ray won´t hurt because the price will be so much affordable)
