Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo has lost the core market this generation

Yet another "Wii is doomedz" thread? Yeh i'm sure Nintendo must be crying all the way to the bank at the loss of all these so-called "hardcore" gamers who probably never existed in the 1st place...

"So N was the first to use downgraded hardware?"

That would mean the Wii is LESS powerful than the GC. It's upgraded, but not as much. BIG DIFFERENCE.

sorry I meant to say less powerful hardware.

but even so, nintendo is not the first to use motion either.

I know that. They're just the first to make some games that utilize them in a way to get the mass market.

The issue is simply that a core gamer tends to play more than a 2-3 new games a year and the Wii is suffering from the fact that it is churning out 2-3 very good title every year and not much else.

So a core gamer ( or anyone that plays more than a few games/year) has to have a HD platform to get his fix.

And it's understandable from Nintendo point of view why things are that way.

It's unlikely that newcomers to gaming will purchase more than 2-3 titles per year so what Nintendo releases satisfy that part of the market...

Mass market is about lemmings and sheeps...
You only release a few titles and make it so that everyone wants those....

But again...going back to the main point.  How is that Nintendo's fault?  Nintendo stepped up and produced a cheap, well designed console once again with 10x the support they had on the GC and TONS of incentives for third parties to work on the system.  Such as a totally new control imput, old control options (GameCube/Classic Controller) and a bunch of things the third parties were complaining about last gen (limited media size, online functionality, etc).

Again, its not Nintendo's fault that there's only '2-3 good games a year'.  Its the fault of the third party developers who passed up the Wii before it even came out as just another 'kiddy Nintendo system'.  Then slowly came crawling back after being spanked repetedly by 'lesser casual' titles.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Eh I'm not complaining.

I consider myself a core gamer ( and no I'm not a 22 years old student eating pizza while he games in his dorm) and I'm fairly happy that the way this gen has evolved the huge majority of the games that attract me are on the console I own ( although that was expected as I actually did some research before purchasing my console ( instead of following the Lemmings chef and buying the same thing as everyone else and then complaining it's not what I wanted)).

It turns out I have a sizeable disposable income to spend on gaming too and due to the way this gen has evolved, none of it will go in Nintendo pockets... Their loss, my gain !

The way I see it, the core market has split up this generation with Nintendo keeping the profitable portion of it while Microsoft and Sony are stuck with gamers who demand so much that it is hard to make money.

Now, as usual, it's portrayed as if Nintendo is in trouble, despite all the evidence against it. Have people already forgotten about Sony's wand and Microsoft's Natal? Devices that were created in the hopes to leave the sinking core market ship or at least to get the feet on solid ground for once (i.e. to generate profits).

Times are changing and gaming does as well. The companies who are able to successfully transfer their core games to the new market that is currently build up (which includes core gamers who have accepted the change), have a bright future ahead. Those who fail or resist to adapt, will slowly die while only the strongest brands will survive.

I can't say that I would miss most of those companies, their games are becoming more and more alike and they mostly focus on genres I hardly care for in the first place. At least I can be sure that the best gaming company will continue to make great games in the future, because they are several steps ahead of anyone else.

Nintendo is on the right side of the current trend, while still pretty much everyone else is hoping that the dying core market can be saved, in order to continue to do business like it was done in the past 10-15 years. But if this core market really had a future, we wouldn't see Sony and Microsoft go out of their way and introduce motion control devices, an idea which they ridiculed two to three years ago.

There's just an issue with your argument.

Nintendo won't be the king of the holydays.

Modern Warfare 2 will be.......

As for the Wand and Natal, they are just marketing toys ( the same way every car constructor shows you a prototype every year of a car that will never take off). You have to show you are looking into that direction even if that isn't your focus...

"Mass market is about lemmings and sheeps..."

Projection. The core flocks around things that the gaming industry touts "HD! Blu-ray! Online!" The mass market has not flocked to any of those, and Nintendo made the Wii to conform to them. They did not conform to the Wii.

Before claiming Nintendo is doing so well with the market market you should compare the adoption rate of the Wii with the one of the IPod or the IPhone. ( or even Blu Ray...)

The curves don't exactly move the same way.

Lets face it many are touting how much Nintendo is innovating but what innovation exactly have they released since Wii Fit ?

Answer : WSR and soon Wii Fit+. Go innovation ! Oh and a new Mario ( which ain't exactly a new franchise...)
