360 1m ahead of PS3 in Europe'

Microsoft's Chris Lewis claims that Xbox still enjoys healthy lead over Sony's rival machine

Microsoft has claimed to MCV that its next-gen console installed base is a million units ahead of Sony in Europe.

Sony announced it had sold 10m units in the PAL territory at Gamescom two weeks ago – just days after Microsoft had revealed a 9m installed base figure for the Xbox 360 in Europe to MCV. 

“We’re confident we are actually around a million units ahead," Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis contested, after the firm announced new prices for its Arcade and Elite 360s – and phased out of the Pro SKU.

“We count installed base differently to them,” he added.

“We count the number of units in the hands of consumers. We are committed to continuing that momentum – not only in places like the UK, France and Germany. Continued growth in all parts of Europe is integral to winning [against PS3] overall.”

I don't think the lead is going to last long now due to the slim!

They should enjoy it while there able to, because the victory will be but a brief one.

Still its nice to see there still holding there own, they just made a great play but sony is going to call checkmate soon.

Although I am usually sceptical when Microsoft outs PR statements (no reliability issues claims until shareholder report, Natal overpromise/hyping compared to real state of affairs shown to journalists, mind-boggling false technical comparison email, etc).

1 million ahead at this point still wouldn't be much to hype about, considering a 1 year and 5 months headstart (2 more holiday seasons) and lower entry pricing.

What does it matter? Sony does well in PAL, and normally sell as much, if not more than 360. Don't get me wrong...M$ has made massive strides in getting the Xbox brand to parity with the PS brand in PAL...after only one generation, but I don't see the benefit of overemphasizing this point by M$. PS3 might move a bit ahead in the short term, but M$ still has the trump card…the current 360s are 65nm…and cost will be drastically cut with the 45nm…so you might see a $50 cut next year…and then we will see Natal, which could be really big.

Considering they had a year head start, one million units is pretty damn bad.

LOL@ all these PS3 fans negativity. What was the situation at the end of last gen in EU? 30m PS2's versus 5m Xbox's?

So now so far this gen maybe it is 10m 360's against 10m PS3's. Even if Sony pulls away from here on, which I doubt, how much better off is MS? It's night and day.

Anyways how many times have I heard 360 is "completely dead" in Europe in the past? Many times. Take with grain of salt.

The 360 will be overtaken. The Slim be packed with GT5 in some way or form when that game comes out, then it's over. EU loves GT.
