games like Mario Galaxy are too complex for casual gamers. The thing those first 4 have in common is that they are easy to pick up and play for anybody. They have a much bigger audience to appeal to. 2D marios are easier for people to understand and control, thus can hit a bigger market.

this sounds like this will be the last hardcore mario game for nintendo, if they  keep the trend.

Did you know that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is going to be harder than the original? Something tells me they don't just care about making money, but instead they also like making good games that people enjoy. 2D will generally be easier than 3D for platformers, but that doesn't mean Nintendo will stop making 3D platformers. Thankfully they haven't given up on 2D platformers either.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

More than one out of every seven Wii owners have SMG. It is getting a sequel. It still sells.
The games to which it looks poor in comparison are all-time top sellers.
Only one Xbox 360 game (Halo 3) and no PS3 game has outsold SMG.

Not bad for a game with a non-traditional play mechanic on a console that appeals only to casual players and cannot sell software (/sarcasm).

By the end of the generation, SMG will cross 10M. Of course, the sequel will do 3M-5M and be labeled a failure.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Maybe because Nintendo still hasn't lowered the price of the game! I'm sure it would get even more sales if it went down to a lower price. I got SMG as a gift from my gf for Christmas '07 and I'm pretty sure that it is still selling for the same price as when it was released back then. Nintendo is very slow to release "Best Hits" versions of their games.

Easy, Wii Fit is a game which isn't a waste of time; so despite the fact that it scored lower, it still scored well; and playing Wii Fit is beneficial to the body. Reaching a milestone in Wii Fit is better than finishing a world Mario World. Essentially with Wii Fit you can play games, and have a very beneficial impact on your health - and is never a waste of time.

Nintendo shouldn't lower prices, they don't have to. If you want to get a Nintendo game, you can be confident that you won't see it for half that price a few months later, or even years later. If you want it, you know the price for it.

Why didn't Super Mario Galaxy sell more?

Because game critics don't buy games.

I have lent out my copy quite a few times, as i am sure others have.

People are less likely to lend out a multiplayer game, as you can always pull it out again when you have friends over.

I think those sales are quite good enough
