Forums - General Discussion - Is a fetus a parasite?

Recently one of are members argued in the comment section of the that a fetus is a parasite, and I am curios to know what others think.  So is a fetus a parasite.

Wow! Crazy thread! You could say it's similar to a parasite, it does in fact take nutrients away from the host. But this is just a sematic thing, it's not really a parasite.

A fetus is a developing mammal or other viviparous vertebrate, after the embryonic stage and before birth. (source: wikipedia)
So, a fetus can actually be called a parasite, since it develops off the mother and the mother's physical attributes are decreased while she's carrying the fetus.

No, it's not.

A parasite is an organism that is fully dependent upon another organism (from a different species most often) to live, and in the relationship between the two animals, one benefits and one is hurt.

A fetus is a stage of life in humans and other animals.

Parasites, after they are born, latch onto other animals to survive. Fetuses are developing inside an organism of the same species in order to be born.

Parasitism is a symbiotic relationship between 2 different organisms where one organism, the parasite, benefits at the expense of the host. (source: wikipedia)

Ok, it seems a fetus is not a parasite then, since mother and fetus aren't exactly different (same species).
