40gb dec 08, freezes ocassionally but nothing a quick "turn off" wont fix!

This goes out to anyone who's experiencing freezes on the later 40GB and 80GB models.

If you've had the system for awhile, or it's seen a fair amount of use, dust may be accumulating inside the case. Enough dust will clog up the HSF cooling system, resulting in reduced cooling efficiency, higher temps and more fan noise as the fans spin faster to compensate.

If this sounds like your situation (console runs louder than it use to), CLEAN OUT THE CASE.

You can used compressed air, but the later model PS3s have a built in cleaning function.

1) Power down console

2) Flip off power switch on back of console

3) Hold down on Eject button

4) Flip on power switch on back of console (while holding Eject)

The fans will spin at max speed and a great cloud of dust will probably fly out the back of your console. That's what causes overheating, and that's what can cause freezes and even eventual hardware failure due to thermal fatigue of the main chipset.

Sony said not to use this method, coze it may damage the GPU

The PS3 it self  gives u a flashing red light (which means the system temperature is dangerously hight) and then it will self shut down

I use this method all the time to clean my PS3! Maybe I should stop?

I wouldn't use it all the time since max rotation on the fans does mean more wear and tear on the bearings, but if you do it once and you see a dust cloud blast out the back, you need to find a way to keep it cleaner.

Dust around your console(s), wipe them down with a dust cloth once a week, use a can of compressed air to blast out anything that collects inside the case, etc.

One important thing about the compressed air; only use it when your console is cool (not during or immediately after playing). Compressed air is very cold. When you rapidly cool down a chipset that's been running hot, it is entirely possible for something to crack (solder joints) while contracting during the rapid temperature drop.

If you're too lazy or forgetful to do this, that's fine, but it's kind of like changing the oil in your car. If you don't, don't be surprised when your engine finally breaks down and seizes.

As of today my PS3 unit is back up and running (80GB BC), replaced the blu-ray drive and works good as new :)

60GB - I think 4th quarter 2007
I've had no issues with it.

My brother also has a 60GB purchased around the same time and his is shutting down on him. I think it's a cooling issue. Anyone know a fix?

To the people with freezing issues, just do one of two things (or hell you might aswell do both).

1. Make sure your PS3 has plenty of room to breath, I put my PS3 where my PS2 use to be (basically a box) and even though I had no problems with the PS2 the PS3 froze a lot, so I moved it out of the box to a place where it can breath better and it helped A LOT, I never worry about freezing now.

2. Get a shop vac and clean the inside of the PS3 around all the vents, it definitely helped for me.

My PS3 use to freeze all the time, now it never froze in the last 6 months maybe longer.

@NicholasCage, thanks!
