Forums - Gaming Discussion - What should I get, PS3 or 360? (From a Wii owner)

Part of me wants the 360, in fact I nearly went out and bought one the other day, but I remembered the 'RROD' thing and chose to opt out, when I buy something I want the full package not a downfall that I have to live with.

The other part of me wants a PS3, I don't see the price point of the 40 Gig model out of my willing to spend budget, however without PS2 support I am feeling I am once again not getting the full package, fair enough I have a PS2 Slimline with a Attached flip up LCD that I will never get rid of, but I still like the idea that if it ever broke down or I did eventually sell it or whatever I can still play PS2 games on my PS3, it would also be nice to put the PS2 away and make room for the big chunky new-comer.

I have a Wii, but it is not satisfying my HD quench for my 42" Plasma, plus I would like to not have to 'waggle' once in awhile, I do love the Wii and the fun it has brought to me and many of my friends, however I would like to play some of the mega titles coming out or already out on the 360 or PS3.

If you are a Wii only owner, what would you get out of the two?

And do you share my thoughts?

I'll be getting a PS3. But honestly that's because my friend already has a 360 and i'm likely moving in with him.

Really, just what non multi-platform games do you want more? That should make the decision. I'm planning to wait till next year. I won't get a non backwords compatable PS3, and also would perfer a 360 that won't burn out on me. (my friends just did, and he had to take it to a repair shop since he didn't buy it directly from microsoft and bought it from a friend. If that matters.)

I'm slightly more interesting in the PS3, because i like Strategy RPGs and strategy games in general. That arn't on portable systems. The PS3 is basically the only system of the three I can imagine getting such games. Unless the 360 got some i missed. (Outside of Fire Emblem.)

I'd suggest waiting till March and see if the new 360's are out or if the PS3 has dropped an extra hundred. If not go with your gut and get whichever system has more exlcusives you really want.

do u want to play halo3 or metal gear solid4?
do you want to play japanese RPGs?
Are you happy playing lots of FPS games?

Look at the games and choose the format that has the most that you want to play, in the case of the PS3 you have to look at whats going to come out, rather than whats already out on the 360.

Judging by your satisfaction in the Wii and PS2, im guessing a PS3 would be more to your taste.

I hope your not implying that the Playstation 3 is the premier next-gen console for JRPG's, because that title currently (and for the forseeable future) belongs to the Xbox 360.

If you want a 360 get it now. At this very moment the 360 is the best of the 3 platforms games wise. If you can not afford to get the PS3 by April if you purchase a 360 right now by the PS3. Since you have an HDTV 40in or bigger the Blu-ray in the PS3 is going to make you very proud of your TV.

I do prefer J-RPG's over FPS, however I do like the 360's current offerings in both those departments, If FF XIII stays PS3 exclusive then I will have to opt for the PS3, only sales of the 40 Gig are going to prove if mega-hits like that will stay PS3 exclusive, my money is on FF XIII will make a 360 appearance if PS3 stays as low in hardware sales.

I do like the idea of HD movies however.

Do you have to pay for the Playstation network like the 360's? Or is it free like the Wii's online, like it should be.

Maybe I should wait until January 08 and then make another anaylsis.

The PS3 isn't going to fail, at least not in Europe and Japan. For the first one I put my money on that they will have outsold the Xbox 360 in numbers before march and in Japan they just need a strong line-up.

As for Final Fantasy XIII exclusivity:

Put in mind that Sony owns 10 percent of Square-enix and that they have a voice inside the company, and it's likely that the game couldn''t be done on the Xbox 360.

And you don't need to pay money for PSN, and it's actually better than Xbox Live.

and it's likely that the game couldn''t be done on the Xbox 360.

I can't see any physical limitation that would prevent the port apart from disk space, and they can compress audio and split onto multiple disks. Personally I doubt the port but I also doubt it is physically impossible to port it.

Anyway I would go with the X360 personally but thats largely due to the library and price. If you have an interest in Blu-ray or a moral objection to paying for online (although Live is by far the most superior service) then the PS3 is probably the best choice.

Regardless how you feel about Sony or Microsoft, the 360 has a pretty stable future as a gaming platform. The PS3, not so much, its obviously too early to say the PS3 is doomed, but investing in one at this point in time especially when they keep comming out with cheaper watered down SKUs wouldn't be a good plan. Incidentally getting a 360 right now is risky as there is no garantee the Falcon model is standard on store shelves just yet. either way though almost all the games worth having on the PS3 will be going to the 360 so your best bet is the 360 from all practical perspectives.

@Rath

Yeah and every time you enter a city you are going to change the disk. The game is going to be 50 gigabytes big, and since Square-enix has said that the game makes good use of the advantages that Blu-ray offers...

Anyway, I would wait until January 2008. I'm also going to do the same.
