Forums - Gaming Discussion - Relative to its time, which console was more dominant...NES or PS2?

Console Wise? Gotta say Nintendo, didn't know anyone back then that didn't have one. Also had more market domination then the PS2 as others said.

Handheld wise gota love the Gameboy. I mean, till the PSP came out Gameboy pretty much was untouchable. Even now the DS still holds close to 70%, and then when you factor in game piracy forget it.

It's just that simple.

In Japan and the U.S., NES for sure. In Europe, PS2.

Europe isn't a country, so it doesn't count.

Isn't Australia in Europe?

Ps2 may have sold more (since the industry has grown a lot since the NES).

But NES almost had a monopoly on everything, it wasn't even close, and it's dominance will never happen again.

The NES all the way (i may be a little biased)

Yes, but Australia is a casual country, so it doesn't count either.

Australia prefers to be thought of as a continent. It makes them feel more important

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

NES.

Don't forget, that PS2 numbers are somewhat inflated by being boosted by still selling into the next generation (so are the NES's, to a lesser degree). A better comparison would be to compare the PS2's marketshare at the end of 2005 with the NES's at the end of 1989.

In North America, at least, I've never met anyone who's even heard of the Master System or the 7800. Most people think the Genesis was Sega's first console. I think the 2600 was a bigger "competitor" to the NES than the SMS.

The ps2 by a lot.

I'd be nice to have an accurate amount of people who own a ps2. Because I'm sure there are plenty of people who had a broken ps2 and purchased another, or sold their fat ps2 for a slim one.

I'm pretty sure the NES was on it's own. I mean, there was the top loader but I don't think that sold a lot...

So that's why the PS2 was so huge here, makes sense.
