It’s the tale of all PlayStation 3 games, the dreaded mandatory installation process. Lately, the mandatory installation has toned down, but every so often we get a major release and we find out it’ll require a designated space of our HDD in order to play. Every Capcom title released, thus far, has required 5GB of space for the installation. It looks like we’ll have to cope with mandatory installation again with Uncharted 2.

On the boxart, you’ll find a mandatory installation size of 1.7GB. Thankfully, that is incorrect. Naughty Dog has confessed that was a typo. Sadly, they can’t give an exact size of installation, either. They did say there’s a chance the game will not have any mandatory installation, but as of now it’s unclear if that’ll happen. Whether or not it'll be a cache installation like many other PS3 games is unknown. Hopefully, we'll have an official answer shortly.

Whether it has a mandatory installation or not, Uncharted 2 will still be one of the top games of 2009.

UPDATE: Naughty Dog has just officially stated via Twitter that there will be no mandatory installation for Uncharted 2. Looks like we dodged a bullet.

Ok so we have games that look MILES better than RE5, and Lost planet on the PS3 that do not need installs, and yet they need 5GB on the HDD to run as well as the 360 version..

Good. A 40GB harddrive wasnt made for 5GB installs. Seriously, MGS4 Bioshock and Resident Evil, are the developers just lazy or what?

Naughty Dog has been impressing me this generation. I can't wait to check this game out.

Naughty Dog again prove the differences between PS3 tech limits and lazy developers.

Naughty Dog are that awesome, other developers should hang up their mice and keyboards and just become fishermen or something. Looking forward to it.

My hat's off to them, though this isn't really THAT impressive. Other developers should be ditching the installs and improving performance without them, anyway.

Uncharted was designed from the ground up for the PS3 architecture, so this shouldn't be terribly surprising. Naughty Dog has already proven themselves as one of the top developers with the strongest grasp of the architecture.

I'll still do the optional install if one's available, assuming it reduces load times and texture pop ins.
