Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are most games worth $50-$60, even today?

Most games, no. Some games, Yes. Most games i would not even pay $10 for. Hell, 90% of games i would not even play if they were free, Mass effect, Zelda, MGS4 for instance.

$50-60 is way too high for console games that can be played in 5-8 hours. Anyway, wait for next gen. There are esitimates that developing costs will be 2-4 times higher. I think in that case games should cost $90-100. Question is are there enough fools who buy games in that price.

Very few games are worth the $60 price tag today.

There are some that do warrant it however, games that have either great multiplayer such as Call of Duty, Halo 3, and Killzone 2.

Some have amazing single player that just can't be ignored, such as Bioshock, Fallout 3, and inFamous.

All of those are worth $60 imo.

I've been meaning to ask this question lately after playing countless hours of Persona 4 and Persona 3 FES (amazing by the way). I know, both games are RPGs and are "last gen" so it's a bit unfair to ask this, but how come I've had more hour of playtime on both games and I only paid 30$ for each? Did they even sell at $50-$60 when they released anyways? That's the thing that grinds my gears though, why are some of these games selling for so low and yet at the same time you find Halo Wars for $60 on a shelf and that game isn't even worth playing after completing the campaign on all difficulty levels, IMO (I'm not a multiplayer type of guy, sorry)?

What is the measure stores/companies use to price games? Are we seriously still paying for "the name?" Should the game content change the price or anything? In other words, what do you think would be the perfect price for games depending on which genre?

Personally, I wouldn't mind paying $50-$60 for any RPGs out there. Most of the time, you'll get more than your money's worth. Also, if the developers find interesting ways to keep the game fresh everytime you open it up (instead of inserting random battles here and there), you know they deserve all that money! For FPSs, I would probably not pay more than 20$ because most campaign only last 6-8 missions nowadays because developers seem to focus on the multiplayer part of their games for some reason... For games like that, I guess that's why game rental services exist!

But for the most part I agree with you, I'm a firm believer that a 6 hour single player is nearly unforgiveable when thinking the game costs 50 or 60 dollars (with a few exceptions most being fighting games) and sadly that's about the average game length now, I'm old school where games at least lasted you 15 hours if it was good much longer then that.  Hell beat em up games used to be hard, and when you either A couldn't beat it or B wanted someone else to join in the pain/fun you'd co op, now they're generally 6 hour borefests with cenematics and boss battles that are just push overs.

It's a sad thing I say.  Which is why I refuse to pay 60 dollars for any game to this day I've lived up to it.

Hopefully people finally get tired of being had by the game companies, I know they need money but making a hype train for every game that is the "next big thing" to get millions of sales for a 6 hour game that people will beat and be ready for the next game the very next week.

A lot of games seem to fall in price so quickly now that I think I have to say most games aren't really worth $50-60 unless you really have to have it day one, because if you wait a couple month you can probably land a deal to get it for $20-30 less.

I really only get fighting games and non-Western RPGs so usually I get my money's worth. I mean, I probably get at least an hour worth of gaming for each dollar I spend on a game and that's usually more than worth it.

I don't think that games should even cost 50$ anymore (especially the single player games). These games are around what 8 hours or less? I just can't believe how low games have gotten this gen. There are only a few single player games that are actually worth their price tag (Fire Emblem radiant dawn: first play through was about 40 hours long for me cuz i loved the story). Metroid Prime 3 was around 15 hours-ish which isnt too bad. I cant think of anything else atm but my god how short games have become. Not mention how easy they have become as well...

No. Very few are, actually.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

some games are worth the $50-$60 price tag, but some games like madworld (mad world's awesome, but it's short) and halo wars aren't unless they are like $30-$40

I regret making this my username, I made this name when I was 13 years old

Life could always get worse, you could be a mod for Neogaf

Consider how long it took for games to go from $50.00 to $60.00 with all of the production costs going up so much more than in years past. I can live with a $10.00 price increase.

Genre has nothing to do with what I'm willing to pay for a game, nor does potential hours played. I care more about quality of experience.

Shadow of the Colossus is worth more to me than any RPG on the planet except for one, and I can't imagine equating length to value.
