Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why no games about Homer's epics yet?

The Odyssey is the greatest adventure story of all time.

The Iliad is the greatest war story of all time.

EA is already making a Dante's Inferno game (which looks awesome), and I'm praying that Homer gets a little love soon.. it would be freaking awesome to have an Prince of Persia-like game with Odysseus as your main guy, or a God of War-like game with Achilles or Hector to choose from...

first i really don't like any of those two, heroes in them are pathetic, unable to acheive victory without assistance of the gods and zeus is even more pathetic, since he loved ilion but wouldn't actually side with it since it will bring trouble with his women.

theres really not much room for a iliad game, since the story most of the time stays in the same place, outside the walls of troy, it would be repetitive having the same stages over and over again, regardless of the genre.

for the odyssey theres more of a chance, but gameplya wouldn't be in constant change, more like a collection of minigames, like tie yourself up to the mast or hide beneath sheeps.

personally i would prefer a paradise lost videogame, any game that has satan as a playable character is a complete win.

hell yeah, paradise lost would be cool.. there's not really a game out there yet where you play the devil!

but think about the iliad for a second. what if you can choose amongst not only the men in the battle, but also the gods, and actually change the outcome depending on your skill? you could actually dream this up as a god of war game set in just one gigantic battlefield, but of course the scenery changes because the place is huge.

Gamers don't read. Most think Homer is Simpson, not the blind poet of yore.

People are difficult to govern because they have too much knowledge.

When there are more laws, there are more criminals.

As an undergrad studying Classics, and having spent a term on the Iliad, I feel qualified to agree that Homer's material could make an amazing game.

Perhaps even Virgil's Aeneid too? The first 6 books are Odyssean and the last 6 are Iliadic...

Really, Odysseus is a dick! I read those epic poems in high school, and I kept hoping he would get killed. I guess if a studio took some liberties with the story (God of War style) I could get into it.......maybe.

odysseus is a dick?? are you insane??

this guy gets lost at sea and undergoes an inhuman amount of sacrifices and hardships with just the vain hope of seeing his wife and son again, in order to save his kingdom and people from the ruthless criminals trying to seize power!

this man is the most heroic of heroes. cmon!

"Homer's Odyssey" is regarded as one of the Simpsons ultra-classics, but, that's clutching at straws.

the fact that the people so far that have posted on this thread didn't mistake me for a simpson fan says already that.. at least there are 6 gamers who read! we're a niche market that needs to be tapped!

Yeah, I think Virgil's Aeneid would be a better fit, it contains both a little Odessey and a little Illiad.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."
