Report: PS3 Slim Is Real, Won't Be At E3

Don't expect the PS3 Slim at E3! According to website Ars Technica, it won't be there.

A "very well-informed mole" says that there won't be a PS3 Slim announcement next week at E3, and that the console won't be in stores until late summer or early fall. Why? "There are plenty of PS3 systems sitting on store shelves right now," writes Ars Technica, "and Sony is planning on sitting back and allowing the supply of those units to dry up over the summer."

A cease and desist was sent to Kotaku from Taiwanese attorneys after we posted apparent pics of the rumored PS3 Slim.

Don't expect a PS3 price cut, Ars Technica adds, but it is still a possibility. This echoes what Crecente said on the Bonus Round about price cuts — that Sony will want to save a price drop for a big announcement at this year's Tokyo Game Show. It seems to make better sense timing-wise, being close to the holidays. An early summer price drop announcement could paralyze console sales if the price drop did not immediately go into effect.

Okay, you are over one week late with this news. But I cant stop wonder about something.

How is it possible to shrink the PS3 so soon to anything that could be called a 'slim' version?

I mean the PS3 is huge and bulky, it's A LOT bigger than the original PS2 (pre-slim) isnt it?

Only 2.5 years, wouldnt that be 1.5 before a slim version usually gets released (and that's with a normal sized console, not the barbeque grill that PS3 is).

We have had this before, but ultimately, the only thing to do is to wait 1 week

@Slime

Doesn't seem that much bigger than the original PS2, I think they'll be able to get it down to something that could be called slim if the transition from fat to slim PS2 is a fair comparison.

^good pics. Damn I love consoles. Just the looks of them, and having them physically.

Ok, maybe the PS3 is just 10% bigger than original PS2, but the PS2 slim was an extraordinary accomplishment. Those pics convince me that PS3 slim is at leats one year away.

If this is true, I hope that Sony manage to shift their remaining stock reasonably quickly and without the shortages we saw previously when Sony changed the PS3 specs. If they don't get it right, their sales will take a nosedive.

I think the PS3 slim is out of necessity. They need to cut the price of the machine and less materials is one way to do it. I too am stunned that a slim PS3 would come before a slim 360 but then, not to be mean, I think MS has been focused on getting the original sized versions to run smoother.

Well the original PS2 was released in 2000, while the slimline was released in 2004.

The PS3 was released in 2006, so you might be about right for when the revision will come around. Of course different circumstances could bring Sony to rush or delay the release of the slim PS3 in relation to how long the PS2 took.

The jasper revision is already on the shelves.  I don't see a need for a slim version of either console.  Sony needs to get that 45nm revision out there

PS3 'slim' will be bigger than PS2 slim.  Now to wait and see how negatively people will manage to spin that.

Further, if PS3 slim releases this year rather than after 4 years, it's likely caused by Sony's desire to decrease costs of production and shipping.  Sony didn't have to worry with the PS2 -- it didn't need cost reduction ASAP, and it sold like free sex even before the slim.  In short, now there's a reason to release a slim version earlier.

As for what will  happen: who knows.
