Forums - Sony Discussion - IGN: Is Metal Gear Solid Overrated?

The first Metal Gear Solid is definately not overrated. It's one of the best games on PS1 and still my favorite gear.

Nothing beats hiding in a box, having a guard pass by remarking "Ah, just a box", get out of the box, beat the crap out of him from behind, go back in your box, wait for him to wake up and hear him say "Ah, just a box", then rinse and repeat.

LOL

God i hate fanboys, almost as much as they hate facts

“If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea” Antoine de St-Exupery

+2Q  -2N  (to be read in french)

its pretty wildly overrated

the gameplay has a lot of cool parts to it, but the core stealth gameplay pales in comparison to splinter cell

the story is cool if you like convoluted anime type stories, if not like me tho, then you wont like it

good music tho

fun, but not the best game ever or anything

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

That's what I call bored :D

@mike: it's the philosohpy and story I see as MGS's biggest strength... it thrives on serious topics, really.

most large franchises are over hyped and over rated and MGS is no different. Is it an amazing game? yes, especially to fans of the series. does it deserve an 11 out of 10? no, and unfortunately it comes off as being more of a movie than a game - which doesn't play to my tastes, but I can understand how people like it (like I said especially if they like the series)

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

Lol, it's a zillion/10.

Oh, sorry. Series fan here.

The story, to be honest, is a mess.  The AI can be very dumb at times.   And of course there are too many cutscenes.

Having said that, I can't think of many better games this gen.

Yeah its so overrated that atleast a .. handfull of people are claiming it to be the best game of their life / gen. I which happen to be one of them; Then again some just probably sees our opinion as not valid becuase we are fanboyzz!

If X360 got it, I wouldnt change my opinion.. MGS4 is the best game ive e-v-e-r played.

Im sure atleast a few more agree, and some not.. But it is NOT overated to ME.

It's a wierd series.

MGS 1 was a great game. MGS 2 was boring as fu*k. MGS 3 wasnt much better. MGS4 isnt as good as 1 but better than 2 and 3. Problem is Kojima thinks he is a movie director when in all honesty, he's Crap. B movie status at the best.

MGS4 is a good game, but worthy of an 8/10 from me. If it came to 360 I'd be buying it.

^100% True.
Although MGS is still fun. In certain ways. Boss fights are always "teh epicness"

Certainly MGS is fun. But it was the first game to prove that a game doesn't necessarily have to be such, it can rely on the strength of it's narrative, it's message to sell well as well. Braid took this and ran with it, and The Path which many reviewers have been calling non-fun yet slapping good scores upon it is really capitalizing upon that idea now.

Fun is a very important factor.

No offense and I know what you're trying to say. But In order for you to appreciate games, movies or etc. you should have fun first. In order for you to get deep into a game, To understand the story more, unlock what everything in the game you should have fun first. Because you won't do it if you are not having fun. You will just get bored. If the game is boring for you. No matter how great it is, you won't appreciate it. Game should be fun and enjoyable first.

Fun is the most important element on a game.

That's why we are playing video games in order for us to have fun.

EDIT: Sorry for the poor english, if there's a wrong grammar. Correct me please I would appreciate it.
