Forums - Gaming Discussion - Duke Nukem Developer 3D Realms Shuts Down

^ start the game over 4-5 times? Didn't they switch... once.?

I know they switched engines at least 4 times. I'm not sure of much else beyond that. I know with the first switch, they scrapped over 90% of their initial level designs.

Damn... Apogee was one of the 90's shareware developers. They published id's Wolfenstein, which was a turning point. It didn't just make FPS mainstream but also would eventually lead the way towards full blown 3D. All your halos, killzones and what not are basically iterations of id's and apogee's seminal games.

It's a piece of goddamn history down the drain =/

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

is it now duke nukem never ?
this is the saddest story of a game ever, they should write a book about how this game took 12 years in development and then never came out

Think about it like this: 3D Realms was merely a shadow of what Apogee used to be. The real loss happened years ago, now it's just a practically irrelevant developer going out of business.

It's true 3D Realms wasn't carrying the flag, but they at least had it in a coffer somewhere. Now the whole legacy will be split in chunks and sold to the highest bidder... can't wait for the inevitable Duke Nukem shovelware to be released shortly.

I posted this in another thread, but I didn't see this one was here first. So for anyone who wants to read;

It's interesting to see how many things were done during the dev time for this game. I laughed when I saw the list of a certain video game franchise on there. =D

Very amusing webpage.  :)
