It didn't just make FPS mainstream but also would eventually lead the way towards full blown 3D. All your halos, killzones and what not are basically iterations of id's and apogee's seminal games. Think about it like this: 3D Realms was merely a shadow of what Apogee used to be. The real loss happened years ago, now it's just a practically irrelevant developer going out of business.
