The OP is very much relevant to today. People still love to point out that the PS3 is behind the two others without entering in the variables. 360 got a rather large head start, and the Wii is dirt cheap compared to HD and has appealed to a new market. The PS3 is doing fine relatively to those facts, yet the Wii is the true cinderella story this gen so far. PS3 might pull one, but much later in this gen.

PS3 and Wii enter the market at about the same time. 360 has the same head start on Wii as well but Wii has outsold 360 which PS3 hasn't achieved. Is it really anyone but Sony's fault that PS3 does not appeal to a new market and is expensive?

Also, have you ever considered PS3 not selling well? Or you think PS3 is always selling well based on the high price tag?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

PS3 is ahead of X360 by 3.5 million consoles from launch. PS3 is selling more systems than X360. It is only a matter of time PS3 will overtake X360 when PS3 console  price reaches optimal mass market penetration point of $299 and below.

PS3 has sold on average around 120 000 more consoles per month than XBox 360 for first 29 months of their lives on the market. Around 30k more PS3s sold every week than X360. PS3 will well and truly outsell XBox 360 and claim second place in console wars. PS3 outselling X360 by 20% more systems in same point in time comparison.

We have to bear in my PS3 has not had a real price cut yet. The PS3 price was reduced back in 2007 two times due to PS3 system modifications.

One crucial flaw, the PS3 will essentially have one less year to compete before the next generation of consoles hit.  Even if "in the same amount of time" it sold more, it will never catch up.  Also, this year it seems to be heading down, which is not good.  The 360 is 3.5 years into it's life cycle and is still seeing YoY growth, so I think we can all assume that this generation isn't going to necessarily fit the "3rd year = best year" of the console life, especially when the 360's fourth year is looking great and the PS3's third year is not so much.

Also, LOL at the bolded, very contradicting statements.

I never understood something. Maybe you can explain...

Does one feel good when they have reasons which help justify the fact that ones favourite console is in last place saleswise?

Well following your logic you'd have to say that Ps2 is still leading the way and XBox 360 and Ps3 are way behind

since a headstart doesn't seem to matter....

Yes, and michael jordan scored more points in 1992 than anyone else this season...yet he is not the leading scorer in 2009.

Lol exactly.  If we start the race from "when all of them have entered" then the 360 is still 3 million ahead.  That first year just adds on the other 5 million lead :D

Rubbish, of course you can.

Its the losers own stupid fault for sitting on the starting line scratching their arse rather than starting to run.

You cant then go to the race stewards and say "waahhh but i ran faster (when I eventually got going).... wahhhhh"

You lost.... thats how a race works.

your theory doesn't work in real life, or the analogy. The race does not start till all the participants are present and in position. MS(in this anology) started running before the gun even was fired. Yet for the entire sprint they are basking in the fact they are a few "FEET" ahead of the competition, with one of the later additions(the Wii) passing them. The PS3 is gaining rather quickly but they are carrying a rather large load to bear as well($600 price tag) which hinders them from just passing the gloat.

Dillusional..  The gap increased since the PS3 was launched!  The gap between is now 8 million consoles..

So starting from the day all 3 have been available for purchase the sales have been:

1 - Wii

2 - Xbox 360

3 - PS3

So what is your argument now?

And who's fault is it that it "has a rather large load to bear"? People act like there was a price lottery before this gen started. "Wii, you rolled a $250, congrats! PS3, ohhh too bad, you rolled a $600. Well, good luck with that!"

+1

Also, to hear some of you, you would think that starting a year early is a definite win strategy or somehow cheating. Microsoft took a risk with that year head start. They risked angering xbox owners and they risked not having a device 100% ready for market (a risk they had to pay for.) All in all they managed their risk pretty well and are succeeding in market share and mind share.

Sony also took a risk with their initial pricing and more difficult developement. They also had to pay for that risk, but are also managing that well.

Nintendo took another risk by going the opposite direction. They are paying for that too right now as they don't have third parties yet to carry the load during slow software periods. It would be hard to say that the risk wasn't worth it to them though.

The one thing I left out was the brand name that was risked. The Playstation brand name was risked along side everything else that Sony did, by far the biggest chip on the table (I would even argue over money.) I personally don't think that was in vain either though. The Playstation was risked for the sake of Blu Ray. I bet if you went back in time and proposed to the Sony execs: "If you put Blu Ray in the PS3 it will become the only HD video format but the PS3 will be in third place of a competitive console race." that they would say it is too bad that the PS3 couldn't beat out the competition again, but that they would accept the results.

Here is a better example.

3 guys are eating dinner, then here comes the cornbread, there are 3 peices of cornbread.

Guy 360 grabs 2 of them and starts eating them while guy PS3 sits theres and watch and thinks "hmp if i want some they will bake some more for me"

Then when guy PS3 wants some and they only have 1 piece left he gets in a temptantrum and says"thats not fair,he got the other 2 pieces before me!"

Guy 360 says "You SEEN me take them you didnt do anything your fault"

That is a better example.
