The PSP remake is out soon. If you were paying attention when this game was first released on the PS1, you'll remember that the typical review score was around an 8 -- solid, but not exceptional. The game's sales could be described the same way.
To be honest, I felt that way at first too. I thought it was fun, but not up there with other recent RPG games, and if I were a reviewer I would have given it an 8 too. But I kept playing, and I ended up putting more time into that playthrough than any other game before or since.
And then I played it again.
And again a few months later.
And pretty much every year since then, in a completely different way each time.
And today, I don't think I've talked to anyone who's played it who doesn't think it's one of the best games of all time.
It seems to me that Tactics is sort of an acquired taste. It's hard to appreciate at first, but slowly, as you delve deeper into it, you really start to get a feel for the brilliance of the thing. So I think that all those reviewers back then just didn't have time to really get into it and see all it had to offer (if they even played the whole game). Now it's coming out again, and hopefully most of them aren't seeing it for the first time. Maybe some of them are the same guys who reviewed it last time, and they've had 10 years to stew over it and come to really appreciate it.
So is it going to make a difference? Is FF Tactics finally going to get the respect and recognition it deserves? If you ask me, with the retranslated script, there's very little that should stand in the way of a perfect score.
On a related note, I just saw this cutscene clip with the new English voices: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23013.html
The FFXII cast, it's not. Seems they got American actors who slip in and out of a pseudo-British accent instead of just getting British actors. The guy who plays Delita is especially bad for this. Still, I think they're decent overall, and since the voices are just over the new FMV cutscenes they probably won't detract from much.
I still can't get over how good those cutscenes look. But as good as they are, they've just got me imagining a true sequel to Tactics on the PS3/360, all done in realtime with that art style.
A man can dream.
