Please dont shoot me down straight away this is just something I have been thinking about and i dont understand it
Ive noticed on alot of xbox games that it says it can handle 720p/1080i I know a few xbox's have a HDMI ports, but they play of DVD's how can a DVD be as good qaulity as HD DVD or even Blu ray? if a DVD can display 1080i was there any point in making HDDVD or Blu ray , or is there something wrong with this, hope someone can explain

A DVD can't be as good quality.

But the player upscales the image to 720/1080.

Just look up dvd upscaling, finding stuff like -> http://hometheater.about.com/od/dvdbasicsfaqs/f/dvdbasics12.htm

This should of been posted in the Microsoft forums.

To answer your questions, the xbox "upscales" the 480p DVD images to 720p or even 1080p. BD DVD has native 1080p so has a much higher quality of the disk. Upscaling fakes a 1080p image from a lower rez source. The results are good but not as good as native 1080p that BD gives you.

Judging by the title, I thought this was another of carmina's threads.

The Xbox 360 is America.

The America is not Games, the America is Namco Bandai.

Actually, I think most of you don't know what he is asking or what you are talking about.

DVD's hold either ~4.5GB or ~9GB of data, while Blu-Ray holds ~25GB or ~50GB (single or dual layer for both formats). Both are capable of storing any kind of information you want (SD video, or HD video, SD graphics, or HD graphics in a game), however without Blu-Ray or some other kind of storage medium, you run out of space rather fast.

(widescreen) 480p = 720x480 = 345,600 pixels/frame
1080p = 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels/frame

as you can see, 1080p has 6 times as many pixels/frame as a 480p image. To store all that extra data you need a lot more space. Sure, you can stick 10080p quality images on a DVD, but you will be able to put a lot more 1080p images on a Blu-Ray disc. Smaller disc space translates into shorter games and/or less information on the disc. Granted, compression techniques do exist, and you can sacrifice varying components to extend your games (reusing assets) but if you want a full length high quality movie image, you need the extra space.

In the end, you can make a DVD can do everything Blu-Ray can do, except at the cost of the quantity of content.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
