Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Does Metroid Prime 3 REALLY have that much worse graphics than HD games?

Technical issues aside, Metroid Prime 3 does a more than adequate job of conveying the picture it wants to paint. Yes, 360/PS3 games look better, Metroid is by no means a bad or a bad looking game. The original Star Wars trilogy was amazing and entertaining. Did George Lucas enhancing the special effects make the movies themselves any better? Metroid is awesome, and will be remembered when this gen is over as one of the best. A lot of graphically superior games will not be able to make that claim.

Just a note on scaling chips. I have a 720P DLP projector with a good scaler and through component the Wii looks great at 480P projected 10 feet wide. The 480i image suffers a little due to the lower resolution. Luckily most games are 480P compatible now.

Having seen the Wii on many TVs I can tell you that the scaling chip is very important to how a low def image ends up looking. A poor scaling chip can wreck an image. Below is a link to a nice description of just how much a scaling chip does. In my case it almost performs miracles on the inputs to my projector even S-video upscaled looks great.

By the way, I have to mention framerate in this discussion. Most HD games run at 30 fps, with quite a lot of framerate drops. I noticed this both in Halo 3 and Gears of War, not to mention GTA4.

Metroid Prime 3 runs at 60 fps, with rare framerate drops. Nintendo could well have made MP3's graphics better, but they wisely chose framerate over the ability to create flashy screenshots.

I agree; 30 fps is almost suffocating (for me) compared to 60.

Okami

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.

The look ok, and do the job. BUT, they don't match up as far as number of polygons per character on the screen and the amount of texturing used.

As a True Graphics Whore, I think MP3 doesn't looks that bad compared to some HD games. I mean, it's not THAT far from Halo 3 to say that "it looks like crap".

I agree with your comment as FPS seems to take a back seat to effects now.  What happened to the 60FPS as the ideal?  This is a major reason I haven't bothered with either the PS3 or 360.  I think the 360 overal has a better reputation for high frame rate though.

It looked pretty amazing on my 32'' LCD. And the game's art direction is second to none. Much more important than polygons IMO.

Why do people keep talking about how great Metroid's art direction is? It doesn't look that great to me. It looks like a lot of other FPS...

no idea, ive got a 14'' SD TV and it looks fine to me
