Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whoa, has Square Enix finaly figured out what is wrong with all JRPGS?

There is no problem with the age of the characters in JRPG.
There's only a problem for insecure gamers.
This thing of "I've got older so want an older hero that I can project to" is just the insecure thought of a young adult.
I'm past 30 and age of the characters NEVER was a problem to me.
Must be an american thing.
Same "problem" as people fearing to buy Eternal Sonata, for the shame of being seen with a game full of bright colors and young girl on the cover. WRPG don't have this problem with their dark art covers.
WRPG don't have the "problem" of having to play as young (read immature) characters.
JRPG also have the "problem" of having supposedly bad and cringe worthy stories.

The problem is always the same : insecure gamers.

So you're saying it's an insecure American thing if your tastes change as you get older?  Do you enjoy all the same movies you enjoyed as a kid?   Give me a break.

^ It's not about that. I'll try to explain. I'm sure you'll agree with this..

Do you remember the classic saturday cartoon series "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" and "Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea"? The character drawing style was sort of childish, but the story/plot was seldomly predictable.
However as badgenome stated above "I think it's annoying because they're so cookie cutter, although like someone else said in this thread (I believe), this isn't really the problem itself but rather a symptom of overall stagnation of the genre."

^Teenagers with big eyes, their personality, the voice acting, predictable cut scenes, silly hair etc.. etc..

I read from your profile that you're 15 years old and naturally you're ok with the teenage manga/anime style.
As you get older (into your 20s something).. Well let's just say that many of us experienced western gamers who have played videogames and PC games since the 80s are fed up and tired of the "new" 3D jrpgs.
2D jrpgs had some charm to them (Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy I-V, Dragon Warrior etc.)
The character gfx were of a "poor quality" compared to the 3D manga/anime characters these days, but still good and it was easy to immerse yourself in the bad gfx. Most 3D jrpg characters are "meh". Playing "modern" jrpgs feels outright tacky. Millions of Europeans and Americans support my notion. That's why japanese developers are looking into changing game design and character design.

Word.

...Man.

What.
