richardhutnik said: Killzone 2 is getting hyped as some sort of PS3 savior. One question on here even asked if the the XBox 360 could survive KZ2's "onslaught". Anyone, can someone give any reason why Killzone 2 should have more sales than Resistance 2? Please let me know where I am wrong regarding any of the following and if I missed anything: 1. At this point and time Resistance seems to be the flagship FPS for the PS3, already having two titles in the franchise. Killzone appeared once on the PS2, and while had solid voice acting, didn't burn up the charts or make a difference. 2. Resistance 2 was promoted by Sony for the Christmas season. KZ2 is to be released during an arguably slow time of the year. 3. KZ2 is the subject of industry jokes of how pre-rendered videos were marketed as actual gameplay. This is an embarrassing stigma. And while the latest clip looks promising, can anyone argue that it is "lightyears" beyond what was saw in Gears 2? Given all these, can someone indicate why Killzone 2 would supplant the Resistance franchise as the flagship franchise and outsell it? And, as far as being a gamechanger, a second question would be: Why would Killzone 2 happen to end up causing console FPS fans to buy a PS3 over a 360? Is it because KZ2 is supposed to have bots? Doesn't Gears 2 have bots? I don't see it. KZ2 is by some developer most of the world doesn't even know, while Halo had been by Bungie, and Gears by Epic, both of whom are known far more than the developer of Killzone. Can someone answer these? And thus explain why KZ2 will outsell Resistance and also be a game changer to result in Sony getting an edge in games? |
Aha. So, even if I make a thread telling people why this is illogical, people still post it. Very well, very well.
1) Yes, but Killzone 2 has a $60 million developer budget and twice the development time
2) Why do you think they did that? They did it so that (a) it wouldn't destroy R2's sales (b) it wouldn't get destroyed by the holiday lineup, especially CoD:WaW.
3) Except that it WAS actual gameplay. And yes, it looks lightyears beyond Gears 2. This is not just fanboy ramblings, I saw Gears 2 in action. The environment design was excellent, the character models...not so much.
Resistance was never a flagship franchise. No game that takes 7 weeks to hit a million sales is "flagship" anything. The PlayStation never had a flagship FPS franchise, they concentrated on other genres. When the PS3 was released, Sony wanted its first and second parties to make games for it, and something new. Insomniac decided to try an FPS, as an experiment. It got good reviews and sold well over 3 million copies, so they decided to make a sequel. It was never going to be a system seller, just a great FPS. Which it is.
I'm not saying Killzone 2 will be a system seller. It probably won't be. Maybe some people will want to pick it up, around +10k boost to the PS3 that week, but nothing on the scale of Gran Turismo or even MGS.
Epic are very well known developers, for the Unreal series, but nobody knew who the hell Bungie were until Halo. It didn't sell because of developer recognition, it sold because of quality and, more importantly, advertising. I don't think any other game has been marketed as much as Halo. Microsoft are excellent marketers, had that very same game which sold 6.5 million copies been PS2 exclusive, it probably wouldn't have sold over 4 million copies.
Bungie pre-Halo were no more famous than Guerilla Games is now. But if a miracle occurs and Sony, god forbid, learns how to market something, Killzone 2 could sell Halo levels. But Sony aren't that good. They will probably, due to aforementioned $60 million developer budget, market this more than they've ever marketed a game before, but not as much as Halo.
I'm expecting close to a million sales first week WW if this happens.
EDIT: Damn, I forgot to mention that Killzone 2 will be a hell of a lot better and get better reviews.
