Actually, their plan was to dominate right from the start and they failed miserably. Luckily, they now realize that they need to make profit on the system, and have changed from the Win by Default stance to the let's take this slow and steady stance.

They should be able to win (all comparisons are HD) Europe with GT5, strong brand recognition, and other good games. But it won't be a massive win by any means.

America is already sold on the X360, and the PS3 doesn't have a chance to catch back up to it. Sony will do well, but the difference in America will be greater than the difference in Others/Japan and Microsoft will win out in the end.

Assuming this is a PS3 vs 360 thread (Not counting Wii and handhelds), then:

-PS3 is unlikely to lose Japan against the 360 (They're phreaking loyal to their locals, unlike the other regions)
-PS3 has to get as near as possible to the 360 in the US (I don't think they can pass 360)
-PS3 can retake Europe, this is the region that will decide all

Sony has already lost this holiday season, which is quite disappointing. Im hoping the slash in price will give it some legs and boost it right back up to compete with the 360 again. Thats all Sony should be worried about for now.

You're right, Japan is PS3 territory. WKC, FF13, and to a certain extent GT5, will make it even more so.

Europe will be easily reclaimed by KZ2, GT5 and a price cut. Another PS3 victory there.

America is the problem territory. I actually don't think Sony can get it back. But they can certainly narrow the lead with some PS2 franchises, especially, again, GT5. Some shooters like KZ2 will help as well.

But to tie everything together, a price cut is necessary. I predict that Sony will beat Microsoft this gen WW, in Japan and Europe, but the X360 will still win in America.
