Do you want to see MS have the same kind of monopoly over the gaming industry that they do with Windows and Office applications?

I give credit to the fact that MS has really taken alot of Sony's thunder in terms of being the undisputed king they were in the PS1 and PS2 generation.  MS's direct measure of success, as they have stated many times, is the failure of Sony.  Why?  Because they want to have the same control over the living room as they do in the office.  They saw Sony as being their biggest enemy.

With Windows and Office, we as consumers and small businesses have to pay a huge premium over market price because it's really the only viable option.  You can argue that Apple is there, but that has limitations.  Apple really had a window of opportunity to level the playing field when Vista was released, but they wanted to keep their image as a high class setup, rather than get greater marketshare.  Heck, now Apples are equipped with a similar x86 platform that IBM/PC compatibles are.

In the gaming industry, there are alternatives.  The most direct alternative is the PS3, which outsold the Xbox 360 for all of 2008 until the price was dropped.  A combination of brand image, percieved value (BD and free online), and reliability statistics (for PS3) helped that case.  Because of that, MS lowered their price to a more consumer-friendly price and fixed their overheating issues, since we haven't heard any widespread RROD cases beginning with the Falcon revision.  Isolated cases will always happen, just like the PS3 and Wii.

At the beginning of this gen, Sony really thought they were in the monopoly position so they thought releasing a $600 system when they weren't completely ready to release software was going to be ok with both consumers and developers.  Obviously, other alternatives were available, and both consumers and devs have seeked other alternatives.

What I'm really concerned about, and why I've always been reluctant to support Xbox (I bought one for my jRPGs), is that once MS gets into the monopoly position, they really know how to keep it going and we consumers have to bear the grunt.

For me as a GAMER, this generation has been one of the best ones since SNES/Genesis for the same reasons.  There are two companies that have to duke it out each other by constantly 1-upping their offerings.  Sony has offered some of the best gaming experiences I've had since I was a kid with the likes of MGS4, Valkyria, and Little Big Planet.  On the same token, MS has made it possible to get some really good jRPGs that they probably had to give some financial incentive to the devs because HD consoles are too risky for most jRPG developments outside of big titles like FF that cater to a small fanbase.

In the end, we want the competition so the benefits are passed on to us - the gamer.

your gaming monopoly theory sounds exactly like what sony tried to do this gen, so yea i like that ms is here to stop them, its noce to have a 3 way market, sony does not have to be the head all the time

MOST WANTED: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Last Guardian, ICO/Shadow OTC HD

killzone 2 is a game 4 years in the making, ever since it was revealed 2 gears of war games has passed and countless rpgs have gone by, so yea sony is horrible at what they are doing, com'om man no fan should wait that long for killzone because at its core it really just another shooter, yes it looks pretty but so did unreal tournament and so did countless shooters before it. anyway if there were one company right now to monopolize the game industry for a while i rather it be Microsoft, sony pushed out a console that was way too expensive that at the time only the elite class could afford while all the middle class and lower class struggled to get one.

bottom line is can one really say they are proud of his or hers ps3? waiting 4-5 years for killzone 2 isnt something i think many of sony fans are proud of.

this gen isnt over yet, sony still got another 2 years to get over 360. compare to the ps2 and xbox last gen, ps3 unlike the original xbox is still in reach of xbox.

ps2 sold over 140 million as 1st place, xbox sold less than 30 million at 2nd place. right now 360 has a 6 million advantage of sony, 6 million isn't much of a difference. there is still a estimated 70-100 million people that still haven't purchase either console, maybe 2009 will determine who wins the console war

As long as Microsoft continues to give me a great gaming experience I will buy their products. It is as simple as this, I bought a game console to play games, and anything extra is a beer to chase the shot. (Love Netflix)

True its 6.1 million and growing that is the issue for SOny at this time.  The funny part is the console war is over for this gneration and Nintendo won it hands down it s a fight for second

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

The winner has already been determined.

I used to hate Sony for how they boxed Nintendo out of third party licenses etc. back in the day but now I support them whole heatedly against Microsoft. Why? Because of the online fees and shoddy hardware mainly. A lot of people laugh at Sony like "haha look how much money Sony has lost" but a lot of that money has been lost giving the best, most powerful, well built and advanced product to the consumer. If Microsoft takes Sony out of the Console game there is a very good chance then they could take Nintendo out next gen. Yes I am opposed to paying Microsoft for online gaming $50 a year or $250 per generation and they could charge even more if they knock Sony out. And I am opposed to the lower quality hardware, I don't think they should be rewarded for making that kind of product. Gamers should support PS3 to support free online gaming and communities that are accessible to all not another charge. With that being said I do think the 360 is a great System as well as the Wii and PS3 I don't want any of the companies to die.

I recently had RROD, but I am not a bit upset about it.  You want to know why?  They have a 3 year warranty for this problem so it makes up for any of hardware deffeciency.  Sure it was a bit of a hassle for 1.5-2 weeks but it wasn't that big of a deal.  So your lower quality argument is pretty much nixed.   For the price, there is no better gaming system on the planet. (IMO)

I honestly don't know why people (fanboys mostly) still try and attack M$ for this RROD issue.

This whole monopoly argument can be seen both ways. Many game devs actually would prefer to make games for only one console. This would save them so much more money, and allow more games, better optimized games, and just all around more innovative and fun games. Although, at the same time, only one console would limit the innovation of what they could do with it. After it is released, they couldn't add anything majorly innovative without changing the main hardware or offering a plethora of attachments.

Either way, I think 2 choices would be better than 3. One for the more hardcore, and one more for the casual. (Kind of like how it was before Xbox) Being an Xbox 360 and PS3 owner, I'd probably prefer it if Microsoft became the only hard core console. It would lead to a lot better games, better hardware for cheaper, and services like Live would probably see a great decrease in cost because it would have many more subscribers and other revenue sources. A single console (or 1 for each major class of gamer) could go either way, but I think for the most part, it's where we will be eventually and I think it would be better for the majority of people involved.
