Forums - Gaming Discussion - Opinion: Two Years In - How The Wii Has Failed

Interesting article.

The reactions to it in this thread are even more interesting though.

I know a sales site tends to cause single-mindedness, but most people will confirm that there is more than one way to fail.

the simple fact that there are so many wiis out there is enough to give wiifans solid evidence that is not a commercial failure even is the wii is collecting dust. But the question is, has it fail to achieve its objective or the buyers supposed objectives? anyway wii seems more and more like a ripoff, nintendo has developed a machine with potential, but they found out that casual gamer do not need that potential to be exploited so the made wiimusic.

I want to buy a wii only for metroid and zelda, i hope nintedo gets serious and make more games like those

@ NYANKS

For many, including me, FPS are much better with the Wiimote/Nunchuck combination. I don't want to go back to dual analogs after seeing what can be done on the Wii.

There are also games like Boom Blox that would change dramaticlly and lose much of the fun factor in a port to the HD consoles.

In business there is only one way to "fail", the juxtapose of that is there is only one way to prevail.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

I don't mind if someone actually backs up their statements with real facts and data, but this article didn't really do that. It makes a lot of assumptions that might be backed up with data, but we don't know that and I don't think even the author knows. The author just decided to state certain things as if they are facts when they may or may not be. It's called lazy journalism.

I think the Wii is pretty much a failure in almost every way save for the one that counts. It's making craploads of money, so game over from a sales perspective. But the games don't seem to be much better than the Gamecube games, it's this promise of interactivity that attracts people. I was never a fan of the Wiimote, I remember expressly calling it nothing but a waggle version of an A button. Someone was eventually gonna go down this path, so I can't be too angry about the Wii in that regard. I just think people are being misled, beneath the shimmer of Immersion! and Innovation!, the Wii ain't all that, or at least not much different than the Cube. Except of course, in the one area - the bottom line.

There are (very) few games on the PS3 or XBox 360 that are not just incremental updates on previous generation games, where the primary improvement is better graphics; and in some cases the games are just incremental updates on Playstation 1 or N64 games with better graphics. I'm not saying this to bash the PS3 or XBox 360 either ...

From what I have seen, game design hit a plateau sometime between (about) 1998 and 2001 and we have been forced to revisit (basically) the same game with enhanced graphics several times by now. The Wiimote may not have delivered on its initial hype, but it has gotten people to start thinking about game development beyond how many polygons are being displayed to screen or how "advanced" your AI and physics are.

I agree

Well basically, it helped to remind people that graphics can't ever overtake gameplay in importance. But does diverting attention away from better graphics to waggle improve things all that much. I mean aside from the Stock Nintendo gems have they changed things THAT much? I mean really, a lot of games that utilize waggle is just a simple remapping of face buttons, and alot of times the new controls can be annoying, changing a simple thing into a minor annoyance. Basically I think it gets old quick. Of course, you can't go by casuals that may or may not stop playing after their wonderment has faded. A lot of core players like it, and I'm happy for them. But using waggle doesn't necessarily make people think about revolutionizing game development, a lot of times developers just find a way to make old stuff work with a new controller. Just seems like progress for the sake of, I can only take awaggle in very small doses and then I need a controller.

The lack of horsepower on the Wii.  Is it because Nintendo spend budget money on motion technology for it, or because of a low price tag.  I think it is a combination of both.

And If someone mentions that the XBOX360 is cheaper than the Wii, that is true for the stock 360.  Keep in mind that Microsoft sells their consoles at a loss, while Nintendo refuses to do this.  I cannot comment on their business practices, as I am not a business analist.

"lazy journalism" also known as sensationalism

a boy died while palying his wii!!!! OMG NINTENDO PROMOTES CHILDREN DEATH

In other words, we have an insecure adolescent male (mentally if not biologically) who doesn't let himself PLAY his Wii games. He goes into toolbox mode and then blames the Wii for allowing him to do so.

Typical poser. The article could not possibly be more wrong.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
