My point is that if a PS1 game is using most of the CD, most of that space is probably not models and textures, it's FMV or redbook audio, which plenty of games did use rather than a MIDI-like format -- CD-quality audio was touted as an advantage of the system. I have a rather substantial game music collection, so I know that both formats were used.

But for that matter, when did anyone suggest that we were going to see FF7 (or a game like it) on WiiWare?

Very few games used Redbook on the PS1.  The games most noted for their musical scores tend to be from Square and none of those games used anything but the PS music format outside of FMV (and didn't really use much unique audio for that) and sounded exactly as they did on the OST.  No quality lost whatsoever on a format smaller than the MP3s you suggested.  So, again, what you're trying to say that the programmers should do costs them space instead of saving them space.  Above and beyond that, you're still suggesting that it's even remotely reasonable for them to produce games so large that you can't even save more than 3 of them (if that) on the system itself.

I think you need to take some of these things into perspective instead of assuming I said things I didn't.  Never did I imply that anyone suggested we'd see a FF7 on WiiWare, what I said was that we can't  It's not possible.  Those are the sort of restrictions game makers are dealing with here, and you somehow seem to be missing that.

What I dont get is why the wii doesnt play dvd's? Arent wii games on dvd;s?

Because of the license fees to play back DVD movies.  Its somewhere around $20 to $30 per a console.  The actual amount is under a non disclosure agreement which as far as I know has yet to be broken but groups have been able to figure out about what the amount is.  This was the reason the xbox could not play DVD's out of the box but required the purchase of a dongle.  Nintendo could offer a player that you could purchase for $29.99 from the online service but how many people would be willing to pay the fee?

This is also why the PS3 should have Blu-ray movie playback removed and make it something that the end users have to purchase from the online store.  Only a small segment of the people who purchase a console use the feature and the Blu-ray movie license fees are $50+ per a console.  Just make playback a $49.99 purchase from the online store and cut it from the price.

You mean the Blu-Ray fees would be $50 per console if someone licensed it. Sony doesn't have to pay money to use Blu-Ray, though, they just have to pay the high cost of actually making that many Blu-Ray players. Really, who do you think the $30 to include DVD movie playback goes to? A large chunk of it goes to Sony, among others.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

a external hard drive? less likely.... but a Wii with more than 512Mb, i think that's more likely than the former.

it gives them a chance to sell units just like the way iPod does, with more discriminating pricing and more contribution to their bottom line.

lots of people will pay $329 for a Wii with a 4Gb hard-drive.

the Wii is an epidemic.

For crying out loud!  You're saying I'm putting words in your mouth?  When did I ever suggest that developers should turn PSFs into MP3s?  I said that if their games are huge, they were probably using Redbook or FMV, and if so, they should turn Redbook into MP3s.  In fact, I said it in both of my posts.  How this translates in your mind to "devs should waste space!" I have no idea.

This thread is about a hard drive accessory for the Wii.  People seem to expect Nintendo to announce one because of WiiWare.  My argument is that they don't need to, because SD cards offer enough storage for a price much cheaper than a hard drive accessory would cost.

tk1989 - PS1 games on the PSN range from 200mb to 650mb. Some of them dont compress at all. And the small ones... I dont think filled up the CD.

Nintendo needs to do something about their data storage. my free motorstorm update is bigger than the Wii can handle. I have close to 1gb of pictures on my PS3, and when I start using it for my camera, that's gonna shoot to 10-20gb. High storage is your friend... speaking of which, I need to buy a 4gb MemoryStickProDuo, and a 8gb SD card.
Kwaad, is this the PS3 hard drive storage space praise thread? It's about the Wii and it's need or not of an HD.Stop posting irrelevent stuf anyways, I even saw you somewhere gloating for sending Gay porn through your PS3.(That's what the 1 Gb of pictures are?) Nintendo already denied the development of a HD for Wii. A simple boot-up from the SD disc will suffice, plus charging for the DVD as a channel would take care of the licence fees. (5-10 bucks is still cheaper than a standalone DVDplayer, hope they see it that way.)

Kwaad's point's are valid and spot on, your comments about the porn are unnecessary and stupid. Wii needs more storage space so people can have more games simple.
Now the question is how does Nintendo achieve this without passing on major costs to the consumers... I don't want this to go down like the X360 ($90 for 20GB HDD & $180 for 120GB) which is absolute theft, considering you can get a 500GB for Frys for $110.
How can Kwaad comment be spot on on a wii thread, when in his post all he does is gloat about the Ps3 hard drive capacity on a wii topic? Most users agreed on this thread already that using the sd card to boot games though an update is more logical than a perispheral that many will not find use. The VC service along with Wiiware is not that much demanding on storage space. Plus Wii is marketed as a gaming console, not a media hub for the need of huge storage space. You are right about the porn comment, i'm sorry. It was just an immature post he made in another topic, but i was just furious for again gloating for his ps3 on a nintendo topic, that why i mentioned it. His patronising tone sometimes gets on my nerves, sorry again.

How can my comments be spot on?

1. Downloadable games.
The Wii will never be able to surpass N64 style graphics for downloadable games, due to data storage restrictions. Also, the games will have to stick with lower quality audio to work on compression. Final Fantasy 7 has 4 hours of high quality audio. If it were to come to the Wii, that would be 300-400mb just for the audio. 50-150mb MORE than it can hold. Nothing but the audio.

2. Downloadable videos.
The Wii simply can not do this, as a 10 minute video will run you around 100megs, the Wii would be restricted to about 25minutes of video... with nothing else on it at all.

3. Downloadable audio.
This is coming, I'm not stupid. However the audio quality will be low, and sub par.

#2 and #3 can be solved with a SD card. #1 can not, as nintendo will not risk the chances of pirating the games.

I have in the ballpark of 24 downloaded games/demos. They range from 70mb to 1014mb. In the ballpark of 300mb of pictures, and 70 videos. My videos range from 13, to almost 800mb. Most of my videos are 200mb. The rare SD ones are 50-70, and the 13-15mb ones, are youtube videos I ripped myself, and left the quality horrible low.

I am using 35gb on my PS3.

I assure you. I can not do what I want on the Wii in terms of storage.

For the stats of my... 'archive' highlight the box below. I made it stealth to not offend anyone who might be easily offended... by... numbers... *shrugs*

Oh yeah, and there's the bragging. I added 994 pictures of a single model earlier today to my archive, incase you were wondering about how much of that is porn. I dont have a single porn video, I have around 1400 straight porn pictures, with around 110 gay for one of my gay buddies... and the occasional comic relif. Working on adding another 4000 of that same model, however I'm not investing the time to download all of her sets becuase I'm lazy.

Right, this is fine, but this isn't what you said in your first post. In fact, your first post is entirely about how great the PS3 is, except for one sentence:

"Nintendo needs to do something about their data storage."

By contrast, all of this is entirely about how great you believe your PS3 is:

"tk1989 - PS1 games on the PSN range from 200mb to 650mb. Some of them dont compress at all. And the small ones... I dont think filled up the CD... I think that's the problem Von was having with your post.

Well nobody cares that you can't do what you want. Especially Nintendo.

Guys, instead of picking apart every minute detail of each other's post and trying to make them look stupid, why don't we try and see what the person is actually trying to say.

Kwaad is saying that he wants Nintendo to somehow offer greater storage capacity.  To illustrate his need for greater storage capacity, he gave examples of how he uses the storage on his PS3.  Is that really so fanboyish?  I don't think so.

In response to Kwaad, I would simply say that WiiWare isn't about big content, it's about big fun on a small budget.  Obviously, a $250 console is going to have some hardware limitations compared to a $600 console.  Nintendo could address the storage issue by releasing a hard drive peripheral, but an expensive add-on would not be in sync with their WiiWare strategy: Offer indie developers with small budgets the chance to publish very affordable games.  It's a win for gamers on a budget and developers on a budget.  If studios want to develop bigger games with lots of content that won't fit in a few tens of MB, WiiWare is not the platform for them.

Kwaad, you make a solid point except: The Wii was NEVER branded as a multi-media console. Why are you so angry for a console that never lied about it's abilities? Steaming movies, Mp3, or whatever were never on the table with the Wii. Homebrew might fix that, but not all users are interested in that.I know you love your Ps3, but the consoles are meant to differ in every way except having fun with their differrent attributes. You did buy them for different reason right? Why on earth would you like to do identical things with them. Gaming consoles are not glorified hard drives, that is just...sad.

And who started that FF7 crap anyways? Square has stated, when asked if they are going to make a nintendo remake for the DS, that FF7 is out of the question to appear on N. consoles. But i find it hard to believe that compresing an 1997 game is that demanding.
