My prediction was that the PS3 wont meet the 360 until late 2010. At best, it will meet early 2010. That is if the 360>PS3 doesn't continue and nothing tips the scale (a tip for PS3 will be early 2010).

Basically, I suspect the 360 will meet 30million by them.
Of course, the Wii will be nearing 80million by that time.

I think in the future we may very well look back at this summer as the high water mark for the PS3. Perhaps from this point onward with the loss of its last great exclusive, and the increasing price divide that should arrive in September the tide seems highly likely to reverse in a large way.

For all the talk of the PS3 key advantages the ones that the 360 has are more pressing in my mind. Microsoft will have the least expensive console this is more then just an incentive for core gamers that could have bought the console at a higher price. This is about gamers with less disposable income finally being able to buy a current generation console. Rather then one that is seven years old.

Microsoft has the stronger titles this holiday season. They have three exclusive sequels for hit series. That is very hard to ignore especially considering that all year long they have been securing more exclusive third party sequels. The law of sequels is that sequels sell. Not only do they sell themselves they also sell the hardware.

Finally Sony has to find a response to the 360 library. Microsoft has been and is securing far too many exclusives, and thanks to the consoles architecture. They not Sony are getting what amount to PC ports to the console. That means the 360 is going to continue to wrack up the stronger library. Making matters worse Sony still has the highest development costs in the industry. Sony has a lot of ground to make up here if they are going to perform at Microsoft's level.

Bottom line Microsoft really played the game very tight up until this point, because they could afford to. I think most predictions for this year took into account the 360 seeing a modest price cut earlier. Rather then a larger one later, and that might be the critical factor. Not only that but nobody even considered supply constraints earlier in the year.

Bottom line this prediction is just not very likely in fact given the rumored price drop I think the 360 will reach thirty million late next spring. Last year this is when the 360 started to see sales increase markedly over the PS3, and once again it seems to be happening almost on cue. So I expect much greater sales until at least mid November. Which is not hard to imagine given the comparative lineups. That is what is not being considered here. Four months of bump which could never be accounted for by Halo 3 alone.

The ps3 aint overtaking the xbox 360 in sales till the xbox 720 comes out and thats the bottom line_____________ The ps3 has Peaked now, it had a HUGE price cut late last year and boy did it need it....... but theres only so much that sony can do now, Remember, Microsoft already have a rough date pencilled in to drop the 360 to that "sweet spot" price of $199.... How long do you think it will be before the ps3 is at a $199 pricepoint? Its gonna be 3 to 4 years minimum (IF EVER) before you see a price point like that for ps3......... Due to price cuts ect microsoft will always have the edge over sony this generation..... and i mean come on, is FFXIII in japan really gonna make all that much of a difference? And as every big game gets released all i hear is " Here comes the 360 killer " Gran turismo 5 prologue (360 killer) Metal gear solid 4 (360 killer) blah blah blah..... how many 360 killer games does the ps3 have left? Let me guess....... MAG, 360 killer right? God of war 3, 360 killer right? WRONG.....!!!!!

 I think there is one huge point in favour of your prediction that no one has yet brought up; popular consoles usually have their best year of sales during their third year of release. That means that next year things will likely be less good for the XBox (having peaked already), but much better for the PS3 (which will be peaking next year).

everyone got so pessimistic lately on the ps3 due to the bad timing of having low stock and 360 20gb clearance sale. the 80gb with no BC at 399 is 2 weeks from now. we didn't think the 40gb was a good idea last year and the PS3 outsold the the 360 during the holiday season with a the 300 pound gorrila Halo 3 on the market.

If you have to state in your opening post that it is a "fair prediction", it's a pretty safe bet that you're just posting flamebait. Kudos for managing to escape mod attention repeatedly in such efforts.

Aside from the that, the prediction is ridiculous on its own. If the ps3 does overtake the 360, it won't be until holiday 2010 at the earliest. Current trends + MS's recent commitment to price cuts overseas and in US, as well as JRPG bundles in Japan, will easily stave off the PS3 over the next two years.

Bluray will be good for PS3 this christmas, but holiday 2009 when we should really start to see the HD adoption rates take off, due to HD library + prices, standalone players will be much less expensive than a ps3. The 'advantage' window for PS3 as a bluray player is slipping away second by second.

So you all mean to tell me that the PS3 will sell about 15.5 million units before the 360 sells about 8.5-9 million units. Sony needs to do something in the game division fast if it wants to accomplish that goal. Blu-ray doesn't really seem to be helping out the game division all that much.

in 2 years its gained a million now in the next year or 2 it will gain over 5 million???? not if the 360 has a decent price drop with the games that are coming I doubt this seriously. 360 ,30 million , ps3 26 million would be wishful thinking.
