Looks like Sony is doing better this year than last. 2007 - 1900 loss 2008 - 1200 loss

It will be interesting to see the quarterly numbers for FY 2009. Fiscal Year 2008 included the 20 gig and 60 gig systems that were sold at a substantially higher loss. I believe the initial loss estimates on these were close to $500 per console. The introduction of the 40 gig and 80 gig really allowed Sony to pair the cost down. The fact that they were able to get a blended per system loss to ($210 per console) is fairly remarkable. I appreciate your research. I appreciate Sony for splitting the cost of my 60 gig PS3.

FY 2009 ends in 2010.

From April 1st 2008 until March 31st 2009 is FY 2008. I guess you mean that, right? I think they still make loss, but probably not as substantial as the previous two years.
But the influence of the PS2 on the figures will be significantly smaller, especially on the software front.
There are some very big 1st party games coming in this FY, as well as lots of income from licence fees on GTA and MGS4.

I agree with Sullla ... it is highly speculative . But overall I see that PSP hardware sales are overall well represented . The PSP hardware did started to make money in Q3 06 , but you do have to remember that they had to make more money on hardware because later on they managed to lower the price and still make profit .

It's actually this one: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/qfhh7c000000dh3y-att/ar2001e.pdf

Ending March 31st 2001. PS2 was launched the year before, so that's the first year of PS2.

The 2000 one tells you something about the R&D costs of PS2.

as far as i can see the opperating income was -51 billion yen when the PS2 came out... can someone translate that to USD? i tryed but the answer dosent seem rite.... the convertion rate in 2001 was roughly 127 yen / 1 usd

That might be right. This year they used 100 Yen = $ 1 more or less.
This year the operating loss of SCE was around $ 1.2 billion. A lot less in 2001, around $ 50 million.

Edit EDIT: no wait a minute.....im confused.... 50,000,000,000 / 100 = 500,000,000

You're right. With the 127/1 Yen/$ it is about $ 400 million loss in 2001.
About a third of this years.

so twice the loss / twice the cost of the system = the same dosent it?

IMO Sony did make a genuine effort to bring something very powerful to the market but if the trends continue the shareholders will be very angry with this turn of events. The economics factor seen to have been overlooked.

Wii code: 4679-4491-5808-6319,MKWii: 4296-3394-2843; Animal Crossing Wii: 3008-1736-4670.

Sony's only making 2 dollars off of each PS3? Even with the Slim/Lite staying at the same price as the fatty?

I don't buy that for a second.

$2 for each software game... not each PS2.

Which seems low.
