Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is It True That 3rd Party Games Can't Sell on the Wii? Figures say No.

I think it may be time to acknowledge that the caveat that 3rd party games do not sell on the Wii is not really a fact. Despite the fact that the industry was totally unprepared for the Wii’s success and is only now really catching up, quality games have not done that poorly. The shovelware has done just as good as it deserves.

Accepting the benchmark that a million sales constitute a hit and relying on Metacritic data of actual and projected sales (all but one being on track or above to reach target)

Guitar Hero III                                                   2.98M
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles                      2.37M
Lego Indiana Jones                                          2.16M
Madden NFL 09                                                1.24M
Resident Evil 4                                                  1.54M
Resident Evil Umbrella                                      1.23M
Rock Band                                                          2.89M
Lego Star Wars                                                  1.22M
My Sims                                                              1.04M
Future Big Hit
Spore                                                                    2.92M

We have not seen anything like the future of 3rd party software now that market realities and development costs of 25% - 50% on the Wii have become clear to developers. But the games above won’t have their developers crying in their beer

it's kinda hard to convince people when the sales numbers of half of the games are purely "projected" and in fact, the game itself isn't even out.

The wiiware one? Wow and it just came out in the U.S. Final fantasy name is strong even if it does have that crystal chronicles name behind it.

That is just a myth. Ps360 fanboys just want to tell that to themeselves , because they don't want 3rd parties to jump to the wii.

How does this work now? I thought Metacritic compiled game reviews in a fashion similar to Gamerankings. I'm a bit confused with that part there.

I agree that the Wii does sell quality 3rd party games that reach projected figures of developers and I also agree that "3rd party Wii games don't sell" is a myth and a foe boy talking point, and I even agree with most of those projected figures....

...but you gotta realize the people you are trying to convince, hate the Wii and won't change their tune unless you present decisive evidence to the contrary. With so little quality 3rd party games released on the Wii(which will change by december according to the release schedule) there simply isn't enough data out there to prove the argument one way or another...yet.

However, if you were to simply say "The Wii sells the most software" then you would be correct sir and no one would dare to dispute you.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Certainly projections are that, but Metacritic is pretty reliable and they do constantly track current sales to see if they match the projection. All of the software was at or above, projection and the one acception was only -2%

i think a comparison is in order with the ps3 and 360.

@sc94597

I think he got confused with the GC one on this

I cannot accept FF:CC on wiiware will outsell LIFETIME sales of FF12 in NA within 1 week..

The PS3 and Xbox 360 enjoyed much stronger 3rd party support because industry experts predicted the Wii's failure. This gave it a late start and only now is good 3rd party support showing up. If you want to make a comparison, be my guest but lets do it again in a year and the results may be quite different.

I apologize if I was unclear. These are projected lifetime totals.
