Midway Gamer's Day: Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe First Characters Announced

Yes, everything you've already heard is absolutely true. The next Mortal Kombat game is going to feature characters from DC comics including Batman and Superman. The only other two characters announced were Scorpion and Sub Zero but it was enough to whip the gathered crowd at Midway's Gamer's Day in Vegas into a frenzy of hoots and hollers.

Later in the evening however, an ugly story started to circulate. According to several sources, Ed Boon stated that the game would have no fatalities. No fatalities? Seriously? Fatalities are what the franchise is best known for but apparently DC will not have their beloved characters torn limb from limb in fountains of blood. Can't say I blame them, but I'm curious to see how such a move will affect sales of the game. Will Mortal Kombat fans be willing to accept the trade off? Superman vs Fatalities: who is going to win out?

Mortal Kombat is not Mortal Kombat without fatalities, IMO.

Get over here! ... please?

I know most of the tards at Kotaku are thinking its hip to flame this game, but as a gamer with my own mind, I find that it's not such a bad idea afterall.

Batman is fantastic, MK needs a shot in the ass. Could be good. What's wrong with it?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I have no problem with the merging if they find a good reason to do so. I mean, compatible with the story...

The thing that bugs me is that they are taking out the fatalities, probably because DC doesn't want to see someone from another franchise holding batman's head with a spine hanging from it.

I don't think mythos has ever stopped merged fighters from being good.

Hell, I would write you a badass backstory for it right now that would make sense in the Batman universe.

Cool thing to me is they are playing up Batman. He's by far my favorite superhero, screw Spiderman, screw Superman, hate em. Love Batman, and looks like the MK franchise respects that, so just playing with Batman in a game that might not suck, could be cool.

Now, as for the "no fatalities" what am I 10 years old? That's like "no achievements." I can see why others would care about that, but I don't, especially if they add some cool stuff to replace it. Most great fighters don't have fatalities or blood, like Tekken, Brawl, MvC. It's a gimmick, honestly, always has been.

I would much rather have a finishing move that's usable in the actual fight. If the game is good, I got nothing against the premise, and I'm intrigued about it, that's all I'm saying. I don't understand all the hate.

It's not about caring or being cool, it's about being mortal kombat lol, and mortal kombat became famous because of the fatalities. For me they are a big part of the game and definitely wouldn't be the same without it.

I remember playing the mortal kombat when i was 3 years old, and fatalities made that game awesome.

A rose by any other name, would smell as sweet.

How are we going to see Superman's gruesome death?? Unless he gets stabbed with Kryptonite...

I gotta agree a bit with Flow. Fatalities may be a gimmick, but it's stuff like that that made Mortal Kombat what it is. Without the blood it's just another generic fighter. Now, I haven't played or cared about MK since I was 14 or so, so the whole thing is no skin off my back, but I think it's fairly dumb from the developers standpoint to take out the thing that most defined your game. There will probably be an outcry from hardcore MK fans, if such people still exist.

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

A more detailed history appears on my profile.

Yeah, there is one right here. Though the 3d fighters messed a little with the game, i still liked them.

No fatalities?

If true...  R.I.P. Mortal Kombat.  May your gruesome zombie bones someday rise to strangle Street Fighter.
