Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: 1st party Xbox games will be cross-gen for "next year, two years"

goopy20 said:

The ps4 came out on 29th of November 2013 and games like Bloodborne and Infamous SS came out in March 2014. So yeah, maybe they weren't launch titles but it didn't take long before we got some quality games that already looked next gen compared to all the cross gen titles. And yes, BOTW is a good game, but how can you compare that to games like Horizon Zero Dawn or RDR2 which set a whole new graphical benchmark? You can argue that BOTW is a better game and more powerful hardware doesn't always translate in better gameplay, but it sure as hell opens up possibilities for developers to do things that would be impossible on lesser hardware.

Like DF said, the huge leap in cpu and SSD (which Sony is calling the key to the next gen) are probably more important than the GPU, as they can radically raise the bar when it comes to physics, ai and world simulations. All things that can directly affect the core gameplay experience.

I can only tell you what I think as I cannot read the future I can only predict it. I am also not saying next gen hardware wont ever be utilised. I am saying we wont see anything drastic straight away. Infamous SS was a visual treat however, it was also criticised for the same things that other brands were doing like only focusing on graphics over gameplay. Sony and Xbox are known for this. Infamous SS is a average game at best based off its reviews, it was no where near ground breaking or evolved the open world genre, its world heavily lacked substance while there were last gen open world games that were pushing the limits and were just straight up better overall packages.

Horizon ZD is a better game than Infamous obviously as it released a lot later however this is not a launch title like Infamous. BOTW was a game that was doing more and that's based on a game designed around WiiU hardware. That should never be the case with the hardware differences between the WiiU and PS4 but in reality it was. Lets look at Knack 1 and 2 and compare that to Mario Odyssey and I think we know which game gamers rather be playing. Hardware is nice to have but when we have devs solely focusing on graphics, we get games that end up just not as fun and lacking, something that seems to be a trend in the launch years of a console.

If you strip the coat of paint away from games like Killzone SF, Infamous SS, Ryse, Drive Club, The Order 1886 and even the later Horizon ZD and you are left with basic game design. Graphics can also lead to companies falling. Drive Club and the Order 1886 failed and hurt the companies behind them, The Killzone franchise was shelved for Horizon ZD and Infamous we don't know what has happened to that IP, maybe a future PS5 game, we don't know, and the famous Crysis franchise which has failed to deliver for Crytek.

In my opinion, I don't believe next gen CPUs are going to change anything anytime soon and I believe Developers are using 8th gen CPUs as an excuse.. Game AI was a thing back on the N64, Developers just got lazy this gen and didn't see the point in wasting resources into it. Also a lot of the heavily focused AI games don't exactly sell well these days so maybe that's why. Physics? Well Half Life 2 came out in 2004 and that game still puts games to shame when it comes to physics so does Red Faction on the 360/PS3. Sea of Thieves was made this gen in 2018 and I will be surprised if I see a game render better water effects on next gen launch games. I doubt we will see launch games putting TLOU2, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo Infinite and even Red Dead Redemption 2 to shame with the next gen consoles. These things will take time and it will happen, just not straight away. We will have to wait and see of course.

Might be subjective but its the consensus. Ps4 will be close to 120m by the end of the year. X1 probably close to 50m. Just by people voting with their wallets and every game journo praising Sony for their games and expecting more from MS. Its not that x1 was bad or lacking just that ps4 was much better and x1 looked bad in comparison with is why gamers will not doubt jumping on the ps5.

You are right about MS doing a lot of investments that will probably only show their strength during 9th gen. But until then we can only hope that its not a lot of Indy gamepass fodder. Which is what a lot of people a expecting. So people will be cautious and not jump to 9th gen so fast for MS.

The real consensus is MS had some solid releases even if you have a perference for Sony's narrative driven content.

The user base of PS4 is also partly from mistakes made with X1 and 3rd parties. Its not all credit to PS4's 1st party. Again, 360 succeeded from PS3's mistakes.

People are not just expecting indie fodder on Xbox. They didnt buy studios capable of AAA content for small games.

Anyhow, Sony is coming out of this gen with great momentum. MS's goal should simply be maintaining and hopefully growing their console marketshare. While PC is also playing a significant roll in their software revenue.

yes ms did have some solid releases, but sony had more than they did, so ms looks weak in comparison.

Ok, not saying that sony dint take advantage of MS's blunders, But can we count on one of them to make more mistakes next gen? Probably not. But we can count on sony to bring out more great games. While we can "hope" MS brings out some.

Aside from halo, gears and forza, thats what MS have released so far(I guess you can count crackdown, but im sure everyone would be pleased if we side step that topic). Until they release something soon, thats all people have to go by.

Yes I agree sony has momentum. And yes, MS is pleasing the existing base with this strategy, hoping to move them slower to next gen. This might actually work for them. Not win the gen cuz of this, but decent sales. depending of the games they actually release, they can pass the x1, or if its more indy fodder they will be under it.

I wouldn't diagree Sony had stronger releases. But that doesen't mean one being better makes the other objectively bad.  Especially when you consider MS had enjoyable games in genres where Sony did nothing notable.

MS had some great content this gen as well. They purchased studios have produced notable content as well. I just hope MS continues to be diverse in the games they produce. While Sony has leaned to heavily into 3rd person narative driven experiences for my taste.

Aside from Gears, Forza and Halo, I enjoyed Killer Instinct, Crackdown 3 was fun if you enjoyed previous games, Quantum Break was just as enjoyable as most story novel style games but with better combat, I played Halo Wars 2 along with all the DLC. I havent played Ori is but its obviously successful. Sea of Thieves somehow became a huge hit with poor critical reception.

I am not gonna argue that's a killer list, but I spent plenty of time with MS games. Purchases of studios like Ninja Theory and Obsidian suggests they want to fill the adventure game void. Meanwhile Playground is apparently developing an open world RPG. I would suspect something big is coming from Undead Labs as well given that purchase.

My guess is MS is gonna aim for three AAA games a year. On top of that there will be smaller stuff you call fodder. The smaller stuff could remain cross gen longer.

Prodicing more software will help hype the hardware, help gain Game Pass subscriptions and even gets more people using the Microsoft store on PC. MS has more incentives to increase software output.

Infamous SS wasn't a masterpiece but it was pretty solid with a 80 metacritic score. Just because you enjoy games like Mario and BOTW more, doesn't mean superior hardware is irrelevant. Some people don't care at all about graphics at all, while others like me want to see the most realistic and immersive graphics possible. Nintendo games are a bit different as they usually have a cartoonishy and fun art style. It works great for Nintendo, but if Sony made a GOW, TLOU or whatever with cell shaded graphics, it probably won't sit well with their audience.

IT's true that things like physics, ai, npc behaviour etc. haven't evolved much this gen. But that had to do with the underpowered Jaguar cpu's, which weren't that big an upgrade from what we had in last gen consoles, and why AC Unity was a bit of a mess. This time around it's different though with CPU's in the things that are at least 4 times more powerful and both consoles having SSD. These things simply allow developers to build new and unique gameplay experiences that wouldn't be possible if it also had to run on current gen cpu's and HDD. It depends on the quality of the developer if that will translate into better games. But do you honestly think a Half Life 3 build around these next gen specs isn't going to be a big step up in physics, ai, level design etc. from Half Life 2? Or a next gen GTA6 from GTA5 that was designed to run on a ps3/360? Also, look at the E3 2014 trailer of BOTW compared to the actual game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6BeAtdoELY

Just to be clear, I dont mean to diminish the value of indy games. They can be great games and all. I just dont think people are considering a hardware purchase based on indy level games. It might work for a subscription service, like a buffe. One item is not the best but theres so many diferent things. It just that when talking about going next gen people really arent gona think of indys a reason to jump, so its pointless to even mention.

And no, because sony was better does not mean ms was bad. It just sucks that theres only 2 competitors, so people always look back at things as there being a winner and a looser even if both did great. But sony did so much better this gen that thinking about next gen people will look at ms with doubt because of it.

Yea ms had some great titles to play cant argue with that. And im not gona get into it with you again about you considering all of sonys games about 3rd person narratives. But yea, doubt they will actually do 3 AAA games a year, but the more they get the more hardware and subs they sell. I hope they reach that goal.

Did you forget? You were console warring in my Cyberpunk thread too 😆

Anyways my opinion here doesn’t matter, according to most of the gamers in this thread you shouldn’t enjoy those games on your PS5 and they are a waste of a purchase. Sorry for your losses.

I have no idea what you're trying to say in the first paragraph. You essentially downplay smaller/indie games having value even though some sell millions, but also keep pushing the lie that's all MS does. MS probably has averaged three AA/AAA games a year. If you think the quality of some of that content has underwhelmed, I agree. But its not just small indie-ish games coming from MS.

Here's the list IGN has for exclusives and you'll see its mostly AA/AAA content.

17. Fighter Within - 2.8
T-16. Crackdown 3 - 5.0
T-16. Super Lucky’s Tale - 5.0
15. Crimson Dragon - 5.9
14. Ryse: Son of Rome - 6.8
T-13. D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die - 7.0
T-13. Halo Wars 2 - 7.0
T-13. Powerstar Golf - 7.0
T-13. Sea of Thieves - 7.0
T-12. Kinect Sports Rivals - 7.3
T-12. ReCore - 7.3
11. Dance Central Spotlight - 7.4
T-10. #IDARB - 7.5
T-10. State of Decay 2 - 7.5
T-9. Project Spark - 8.0
T-9. Quantum Break - 8.0
8. Dead Rising 3 - 8.3
7. Killer Instinct - 8.4
6. Fru - 8.5
5. Forza Motorsport 5 - 8.8
T-4. Forza Motorsport 6 - 9.0
T-4. Gears 5- 9.0
T-4. Halo: The Master Chief Collection - 9.0
T-4. Halo 5: Guardians - 9.0
T-4. Rare Replay - 9.0
T-4. Sunset Overdrive - 9.0
T-3. Forza Motorsport 7 - 9.2
T-3. Gears of War 4 - 9.2
2. Forza Horizon 3 - 9.5
1. Forza Horizon 4 - 9.6

They aren't done yet either with AA/AAA content. X1 is getting Bleeding Edge, Gears Tactics and Halo Infinite this year. Flight Simulator, Grounded, Everwild and Hellblade 2 seem to be slated for X1. Then I assume Forza 8 and Age of Empires IV could happen.

There might be more given the promised cross gen support.

I'm not an expert on CPU, but it certainly seems the 8th gen did get a significant boost in CPU capabilities. Perhaps dated and underpowered, but still a seemingly significant upgrade in practice. In spite of that, we didn't really see much improvement in AI. I argue good AI is often more of a design issue than specs. We can even point to OG Xbox games for having fairly impressive AI.

I would argue physics has improved but we just don't see developers creating games pushing that in many major releases. Off the top of my head I would say Dangerous Golf, Megaton Rainfall, Dead Rising 3 and Just Cause 3/4 demonstrated great use of physics over last gen.

Again, AC Unity was poorly optimized in general. Dead Rising 3 had large crowds of zombies you actually interacted with, could drive through, blow up, etc. DR3 ran horribly at launch, but after many patches it eventually became a solid 30 fps experience.

If developers wanted to make games that pushed AI and physics, they could have certainly did that. But that's not necessary when you're essentially making more of the same with better graphics.
